Klei Entertainment and CAPY do not disappoint. Their most recent DLC for Don't Starve, Shipwrecked, is literally game-changing. With Windwaker-esque water exploration, new creatures who want to kill you, and a dozen fresh ways to die, Shipwrecked is not just new features attached to the original game. It's practically its own game and it's amazing.
Veterans of Don't Starve will be familiar with the mechanics of the world, but will thoroughly enjoy discovering islands, trying life at sea, the wonderful taste of limpets, and the joy of killing the most annoying monkeys. Old and new players alike have refreshing adventures waiting for them in this latest expansion of the popular indie game. Unfortunately at this time, the DLC is just single player game but due to the success of Don't Starve Together (and the promise of multiplayer for RoG), we could potentially see a multiplayer feature for this expansion.
Starting off, players will find themselves stranded on an island—much like the original Don't Starve. However, it is quickly clear that the DLC has overhauled the entire world: foreign trees dot the landscape, sand surrounds you, and"are those crabs?" While you do need to collect things like straw, twigs, and flint, there are many new resources and techs to collect and build. For example, one of the first tools you will need is a machete, with which you can hack at bushes to get bamboo and vines. Foraging doesn't include carrots anymore, either, but has new items like sweet potatoes, limpets, and more.
It becomes very clear from the get-go that you're on a small island with no gold. Every Don't Starve veteran knows that you need gold to get to new tech tiers, so what are you supposed to do? "Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than those you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbor. Catch the wind in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." Craft a raft! Hurry and get off the island! Discover the entirely new world of Don't Starve: Shipwrecked that is hungrily and happily out to kill you.
