Anarchy Online has just turned 20 years old and developer Funcom is celebrating the milestone with a new video that takes the sci-fi MMORPG’s fans on a trip down memory lane. The video features many of the game’s original developers, including former world designer Viljar Sommerbakk, former Game Director Craig Morrison, and Funcom's CEO Rui Casais.

“The development of Anarchy Online started in 1995, just two years after Funcom was founded in a dank cellar in Munkedamsveien in Oslo,” said Funcom in the anniversary press release. “More than 70 developers were eventually involved in the development of a game which would make or break the entire company. It was a highly risky affair, especially since no one had really created anything like this ever before.”

Anarchy Online officially launched in June 27, 2001 and was the first ever sci-fi MMORPG. It was also the first game to be distributed digitally online and pioneered several features that can now be found in most modern MMOs.

“I’m so proud to have been part of that legacy and to get to create this wonderful game and this wonderful place that players have called their home for 20 years,” said Craig Morrison. “Even to this day, as I travel and do conventions, talk to player communities, and meet with gamers and indeed game developers, I am always struck by how well-received the game is and how people have such fond memories of Anarchy Online.”
