Discord's New Video Chat Feature is Coming Soon
Gamers will be happy to hear that Discord will finally be adding the much-needed videochat feature to its popular voicechat platform. According to a recent blog post, Discord has announced that 5% of its users will have access to the testing phase of its newly-added videochat and screenshare functions.
Videochat will be limited to DMs and group DMs. Up to 10 people can be in the videochat at once, but the quality of the call may be reduced after 5 people.
For those who were not able to get into the testing phase, Discord has said that they are "still at least a month out from considering a full launch". In the meantime, Discord is working hard to ensure a smooth rollout.
Compared to voice data, video data is a behemoth and transmitting it across the intertubes takes way more bandwidth. We’re doing this test to see how our servers handle the increase in bandwidth.
There’s likely bugs, crashes, and other issues that we’ve been unable to catch ourselves. We want to iron as much as we can before launching to everybody. We’re suckers for quality and want to make sure we end up launching the most polished experience we can.
Having secured a reported $50M in funding earlier this year, Discord is moving fast and bringing their A-game. With the addition of videochat, Discord will be a strong contender against other platforms such as Skype and Twitch's Curse client.
The Discord community is no doubt looking forward to the release of videochat. The time has come to finally uninstall Skype, and I am more than happy to see it go.
