Creepypasta-inspired co-op survival game Escape the Backrooms is seeing a huge surge in popularity over the past few days thanks to an ongoing Steam sale. Since the sale went live, the game’s peak concurrency has soared from roughly 2,000 players to an all-time high of 16,529 concurrent players.

The spike can also be attributed to the release of its latest major update on January 26, which introduced nine new disturbingly dark levels for horror fans and thrill-seekers to work their way through.

“Wanderers, it’s time to return to the backrooms for a new expedition featuring 9 new levels, each bringing you to both new and familiar destinations in the backrooms,” one-man indie developer Fancy Games announced.

Escape the Backrooms launched in August 12 to rave reviews from the Steam community. It’s currently enjoying a “Very Positive” rating on the platform with Steam users praising its spine-chilling and chaotic but extremely fun gameplay. It’s proximity voice chat also adds to the immersion as you and your friends try to escape the game’s nightmare-inducing backrooms with supernatural beings chasing you down.

“Escape the Backrooms is a 1-4 player co-op horror exploration game. Traverse through eerie backrooms levels while avoiding entities and other danger to try and escape. Free content updates with new levels and game modes keep the community rewarded.”

If you want to experience the game’s horrors yourself, it’s currently on sale at 20% off on Steam until February 2. You can catch a glimpse of the newly added levels along with tips on how to escape them in the video below.
