Great Wall Online Is A New Chinese MMORPG Based On The Matt Damon Movie

I've officially seen everything. A new Chinese MMORPG called "Great Wall Online" launched today and no, the timing isn't some weird coincidence; the game is actually based on the Matt Damon movie of the same name. Yes, the one with a 35% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, it is even said that director Zhang Yimou took part in the development of the game.

Great Wall Online entered a no-wipe Closed Beta state in China today and, from what 17173 is reporting, some of its features are in line with what players regularly ask for here in the West. For example, the cash shop only sells cosmetics, potions of some sort, and a few other items; in order to get good gear, you have to work for it. The game is designed so that it is not pay-to-win. Dungeons can be taken on as two-player groups, but there's a good chance that you'll get stomped; it is highly recommended that you take them on as four-player groups. Bosses will use fairly complex attacks in which players may need to hide behind rocks from said attacks. The game also has a nation war PvP system.

You can find more information about Great Wall Online on the official website. If you want to try it out, you can get Closed Beta key from 17173. The registration process is fairly simple, only requiring you to register on the official website and then activate a key as described on 17173's giveaway page. As far as I can tell, you do not need a Chinese ID number or Chinese phone number.

In lieu of a trailer that is readily available on YouTube, I've included a trailer for the movie below. You can find a video of the game in 17173's article about the Closed Beta launch.
