Guild Wars 3 Officially Announced, Bringing the Franchise Back
ArenaNet has officially announced Guild Wars 3 at Summer Game Fest, confirming the game will launch on PC and PlayStation 5 - the first console release in the franchise's history. Colin Johanson appeared on stage to make the reveal, alongside a cinematic trailer introducing the game's setting and central mechanics.
This is ArenaNet's first new game since Guild Wars 2 launched in 2012, making the announcement a genuine inflection point for both the studio and NCSoft's Western portfolio. Rather than continuing forward in the GW2 timeline, the team has planted GW3 more than 1,000 years before the events of the original Guild Wars - a decision that sidesteps any risk of cannibalizing GW2's audience while opening up unexplored Tyrian lore. ArenaNet has confirmed it will continue actively developing all three games simultaneously, and GW2 continues to receive updates in the meantime.
What's Confirmed So Far
Details are still limited - pricing, business model, and a firm release window won't be discussed until late 2026 and into 2027 - but here's what ArenaNet has locked in:
- Platforms: PC (including Steam) and PlayStation 5; players can already wishlist on both storefronts
- Setting: The Tyrian region of Orr, more than 1,000 years before the original Guild Wars, described as a vast wilderness frontier rich with magic and spirit entities
- Player faction: The Vaelwardens, an order charged with protecting Orr and the spirits of the wild
- Mounts: Every player gets a Seeker, a spirit-connected mount that also serves as a link to Orr's wild spirits
- Controls: Designed for both keyboard/mouse and controller, with an emphasis on positioning and momentum
- Beta: First test window is Fall 2027
The Bigger Picture
ArenaNet is pitching GW3 as a "modern evolution of the MMORPG" - language that signals more than a reskin of GW2's systems. The console-first control design and open-world spirit mechanics suggest a deliberate reach toward a broader audience, while the deep Tyrian lore keeps it grounded for the existing community. Given how significant the development costs of modern MMOs have become, the simultaneous three-game strategy is an ambitious commitment from NCSoft.
ArenaNet has scheduled a Guild Wars franchise stream for more details, with the official site and Steam page already live for sign-ups. With beta still two-plus years out, the next meaningful reveal window is late 2026.
