Blizzard Axes Decor Duels in WoW 12.1 — Bee Mount and Spellbreaker Cosmetics at Risk

Blizzard has confirmed that Decor Duels - the prop-hunt minigame introduced to World of Warcraft (subscription-based, PC) in patch 12.0.5 of the Midnight expansion - will be shut down with the release of patch 12.1, Curse of Ula'tek, and a significant portion of its exclusive rewards will go with it.

The mode had players split into hiders, who disguised themselves as inanimate objects, and seekers tasked with finding them - framed in-lore as an elven training exercise. It launched without any stated end date, which is why Blizzard's removal announcement landed as a surprise; there was no prior framing of Decor Duels as a limited-time affair, unlike patch 11.1.5's Dastardly Duos, which was explicitly time-boxed from the start.

Final Surge Tuning and What It Means for Rewards

Blizzard has applied a set of last-minute balance changes - described as a "final surge" - that are live on retail servers now:

  • Auto-reveal removed: Hiders are no longer automatically exposed when 30 seconds remain in a match.
  • Flies penalty gone: The visual penalty for stationary Hiders has been removed.
  • Seeker energy rate reduced: Seekers gain energy 20% more slowly.
  • Double Illusionary Coins: Players earn coins at twice the normal rate for the remainder of the event.

These are changes the playerbase had been requesting since launch - arriving now, right before the shutdown. On the PTR, Disguised Decor Duel Vendor items are available for Voidlight Marl, suggesting housing decor will remain purchasable after the event ends. However, Blizzard has made no mention of post-event access to cosmetics sold by Gamesmaster Fleurian - including the giant magical bee mount and the frequently requested Spellbreaker cosmetics - making those effectively time-limited to whatever runway remains before 12.1 drops.

The reasoning behind the removal hasn't been stated publicly. Low queue numbers are the obvious speculation, but Blizzard has historically left underperforming content in the game rather than pulling it - Heroic Warfronts being the standing example. The decision remains unexplained, and Curse of Ula'tek is adding enough new content that the loss may not register broadly, but for players invested in Decor Duels' cosmetic track, the window to finish farming is now fixed and closing. Anyone targeting the bee mount or Spellbreaker items should be in queue.
