Final Fantasy XI Lets Players Reach Level 75 Without a Trial Deadline

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy XI's free trial will no longer expire, letting new players progress through the subscription MMORPG's base game up to level 75 without a time limit as part of the game's 24th anniversary celebration.

Final Fantasy XI launched in Japan in 2002 as the first MMORPG on PS2 and the first cross-play MMORPG. The game continues to use monthly subscriptions, while the anniversary promotion also covers expansion discounts, reduced fees and incentives for returning players.

What's confirmed so far

  • Unlimited free trial: Players can access the base game up to level 75 for free, with no expiration on the trial period.
  • Expansions excluded: The free tier does not include Final Fantasy XI's expansion content, and paid subscribers receive bonuses unavailable to trial accounts, including XP boosts.
  • Expansion bundle discount: The Ultimate Collection Seekers Edition is discounted to $10 on Steam for the anniversary.
  • Additional discounts: Square Enix is reducing other fees, including world transfer costs, alongside a Return Home to Vana'diel campaign for people who played in the past, including players from the PS2 and Xbox 360 eras.
  • Subscription pricing: A single-character subscription costs $12.95 per month, made up of an $11.95 base fee and $1 per character.
  • Content roadmap: Producer and director Yoji Fujito outlined celebratory in-game events for the coming weeks and said Square Enix is preparing content intended to help the game reach its 30th anniversary.

What the anniversary promotion offers

The revised trial allows players to spend as long as they want in Final Fantasy XI's base game before subscribing, up to level 75. Players who want access to expansions can purchase the discounted collection, while subscribers can use bonuses such as XP boosts that are not available on the free trial.

Square Enix is pairing the trial change with anniversary events, discounts and the Return Home to Vana'diel campaign. The campaign welcomes former players back to Vana'diel, including those who previously played on PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360.
