Throne and Liberty's First Named Expansion Brings a Frozen World and Gauntlets Class
NCSoft and Amazon Games have launched The Frozen Divide, the first named full-scale expansion for their free-to-play MMORPG Throne and Liberty, introducing the frozen region Nix, a new weapon class, a level cap increase to 60, and a slate of systemic additions as of June 25, 2026.
The expansion marks a deliberate shift in live-service cadence for Throne and Liberty - away from the numbered balance patches that dominated its post-launch window and toward larger, named drops. Solisium's Awakening was the last major content push before this; The Frozen Divide goes considerably wider in scope, with NCSoft billing Nix as the largest region in the game's history, built around vertical traversal and environmental hazards tied to unstable Red Fog.
What's in The Frozen Divide
- Nix region: New frozen wasteland Dominion, navigable via the Auroral Path fast transport system or the Aethersuit flight morph - a dedicated traversal mechanic designed for Nix's cliffs and layered terrain.
- Dungeons: Two Epic co-op dungeons - Stone Grave Cradle and Frostbreath Cave - alongside new field bosses and Ascended-tier adjustments to existing ones.
- Field events: 25 regular and 5 irregular field events across Nix, available solo or in a party, in open-world or instanced formats.
- Remnants of Nix: Four-player PvP-extraction mode tied to the new region.
- Gauntlets weapon: The third post-launch weapon addition after Spear and Orb, with over 20 types and 13 additional recipes. Designed as a Tank/DPS hybrid with two stances - a frontline durability stance and a mobile burst-combo stance - plus Archboss variants. Pre-release community coverage flagged its crowd control and bleed toolkit as potentially overtuned for PvP.
- Redfrost gear: Region-exclusive cursed items requiring purification before equipping.
- Chain skill system: Allows up to five skills, including duplicates, slotted into a quick-slot chain for faster execution.
- Weapon Mastery expansion: New passives and skills added across weapon lines, building on the groundwork laid by patch 3.34.0 in mid-May.
The Gauntlets balance question will be the first real test. Pre-launch datamining pointed to a kit that combines shield block, weakness cleansing, and strong bleed application - a combination that tends to surface in patch-one PvP complaints before studios dial it back. Whether NCSoft tuned aggressively for launch engagement or left headroom is something the next few weeks of Remnants of Nix will clarify. The expansion's broader ambition - using Aethersuit traversal and the expanded Mastery framework as templates for future regions - gives it more structural weight than a typical zone drop, which is worth watching as the cadence for Throne and Liberty matures. Amazon's track record with major content pushes for Lost Ark shows how quickly momentum can swing on whether the new systems land with the existing player base.
