Old School RuneScape Offers A Preview Of Its Upcoming Not-A-Mod HD Mode

Old School RuneScape is also set to get a fresh coat of paint alongside RuneScape with its own OSRS HD Mode. The improved graphics option builds on the popularity of a fan-made HD mod that developer Jagex had previously taken down before backtracking and making it a permanent option in the classic free-to-play MMORPG.

The upcoming HD Mode will feature fully dynamic lighting, volumetric fog, sunlight and weather effects, and water textures, hopefully in time for the addition of sailing. Players will also be able to freely switch between HD and the old look with just a few mouse clicks. The HD mod will also remain available for use even after the official mode comes out.

Jagex has yet to announce a release date for the OSRS HD Mode but alpha testing is expected to begin soon.

“You can expect plenty of feedback opportunities – including beta tests – as we continue to refine HD mode in line with our community’s expectations,” says Jagex. “In fact, we plan to have a playable alpha in your hands very soon, followed by an always-on beta once we’re comfortable with its performance.”

For now, you can catch a preview of its promised visual improvements in the first look trailer below.
