Since Blizzard Entertainment announced Overwatch 2 at BlizzCon 2019, the studio hasn’t entirely been clear on what’s going to happen to the original Overwatch game when the sequel/expansion comes out later this year. Back then, former Blizzard Vice President Jeff Kaplan said that they wouldn’t be abandoning the original live service game and the players who were already invested in it.

Blizzard, however, has apparently backtracked on that promise, confirming in a recent AMA session that Overwatch 2 will completely be replacing the current live service when it launches this October.

As for the promise of not abandoning invested players, Blizzard revealed in the AMA that all existing currencies will carry over to the sequel while lootboxes will be retired entirely. The good news is that any unopened lootboxes will automatically be opened and players will be able to directly claim all of their contents.

The studio also answered questions on the Escort and Push maps, the drastic changes coming to support heroes, including Symmetra and Moira, and the new player experience. You can check out the full Reddit AMA thread here and a more concise version here.
