It’s been six years since Epic Games pulled the plug on Paragon and added the third-person MOBA’s assets to the Unreal Engine 4 toolkit. Plenty of clones and recreations have popped up since then, nearly all of which failed to capture the attention of the masses.

One such clone is Predecessor, the flagship game of London-based indie developer Omeda Studios which was founded by Robbie Singh, one of Paragon’s prolific content creators. The “next-generation team-based strategy game” has been in paid early access since 2022 and will be kicking off a limited-time open beta test on March 28.

“Predecessor is a fast-paced action-MOBA title that combines strategic thinking and teamwork with pulse-pounding combat. Two teams of five players choose from a roster of more than 30 unique Heroes and fight to protect their bases while working together to take down the enemy team’s base. During the fight, players earn XP to unlock and level up powerful abilities, while collecting gold to buy items to help them defeat the enemy team.”

The game’s free-to-play beta launch will also mark its arrival on Xbox Series X|S with cross-play support for all available platforms. It’s unclear how long it will remain free-to-play, but Singh is all about bringing in more players which will in turn provide them with more data to speed up the game’s development.

To encourage more players to jump in, the team has slashed 90% off the game’s box price on Steam, bringing it down from $8.99 to just $0.89 until March 21. Unfortunately, it’s still full price on the Epic Games Store.

Meanwhile, Singh talks about their plans for Predecessor for the remainder of 2024 in his PRED Talk blog post and the dev video below.
