Sony has halted production of its PSVR 2 virtual reality headsets due to underwhelming sales over the past few months, likely due to the release of the Meta Quest 3 in October 2023. According to tech market research firm Counterpoint, PSVR 2 sales accounted for just 15% of all VR headset sales in Q4 2024 with the majority of the market share going to Quest 3 at a whopping 72%.

The PSVR 2 also failed to compete with the Meta Quest 2 due to its disappointing lineup of supported titles, its lack of backward compatibility, and its overall lack of popularity among the PlayStation 5 community.

The PSVR 2 has sold over 2 million units since its launch in February 2023 which is roughly the same number of PSVR units sold during its first year. Halting production will allow Sony to dispose of surplus inventory while it figures out its next step.
