Despite the World of Warcraft community’s poor reception of the Archaeology system, Blizzard is taking another stab at relic hunting mini-games with the Azerothian Archives public event.

The new gameplay system will arrive as part of next week’s Seeds of Renewal update and will task players with scouring the Dragon Isles every hour to excavate archaeological finds and complete research tasks that will help them piece together the history of the ancient Battle of Traitor’s Rest.

“Visit Geo-Archaeologist Roska Rocktooth to receive an elemental assistant specific to each site to help you discover Finds to excavate,” Blizzard explains. “Once a Find is located, plant a shaman totem and instruct your elemental pal to carefully excavate the spot to reveal a myriad of interesting Finds, from relics to enemies to take down.”

Also buried in various dig sites across the Dragon Isles are items that will reveal scenes from the past using a special set of goggles called Technoscryers. The same goggles can be used to locate the said items via alerts and directional pings.

Each site will also house a familiar which creates copies of itself to seek out other sources of information related to the site. Players can follow the familiar to the location of the information to uncover each site’s story as part of the new weekly tasks.

Rewards for participating in the event include Archivist cosmetics, Excavator and Historian transmog sets, and the Explorer’s Stonehide and Clayscale Hornstrider mounts.

Seeds of Renewal hits the live servers on January 16. In the meantime, you can learn more about the Azerothian Archives on the World of Warcraft official site.
