The World of Warcraft Classic community, particularly the more hardcore players, have come up with a way to up the ante on classic servers with self-imposed permadeath rules.

To do this, players looking to start a hardcore run will be required to install an addon called Classic Hardcore which will track their progress, announce their deaths to the hardcore community, and immortalize those who make it to level 60 without dying. It will also come with its own set of rules and restrictions for player interaction, grouping, mounts, and dungeons, as well as trading and the use of the auction house, both of which are not permitted.

With the addon and the community’s quickly gaining popularity, its apparently caught the eye of the developers who might just be planning to implement their own permadeath servers. Dataminers have unearthed code referencing “hardcore warnings” on the public test server, which has sparked rumors that hardcore servers could be coming soon.

Hardcore servers aren’t necessarily uncommon in the MMORPG world. Dungeons and Dragons Online in particular regularly runs a hardcore server challenge. Whether Blizzard will run a similar challenge, a permanent server, or whether they’ll do it at all still remains to be seen.
