Blood of Steel Review

By, Aey Igh

Blood of Steel, developed by Evolution Studio, offers a fresh take on the MOBA genre by incorporating real-time strategy elements and historical figures into its gameplay. Drawing comparisons to Mount & Blade and Conqueror's Blade, Blood of Steel stands out with its intuitive controls, diverse game modes, and focus on tactics. However, the game does have its shortcomings in terms of graphics, translation quality, and monetization.

Gameplay and Controls:

Blood of Steel's combat system is reminiscent of Mount & Blade: Warband and Bannerlord, featuring directional melee combat and a variety of troop types. The game offers more movement options, such as dashes and rolls, making it feel more dynamic. The intuitive controls allow players to easily pick up the game and learn the basics, while the advanced training and practice help them master more complex tactics. The game offers a range of game modes, from PvP Legion and Siege matches to PvE Campaigns and Territory Wars.

Graphics and Animation:

While Blood of Steel's graphics may not be cutting-edge, they are sufficient for an enjoyable gaming experience. The animations, however, are a bit stiff and janky, with more polished animations reserved for skills. The disparity between basic unit animations and skill animations can be jarring, but players may eventually grow accustomed to it.

Translation and UI:

As a Chinese-developed game, Blood of Steel suffers from translation issues, leading to numerous spelling mistakes and grammatically incorrect statements throughout the game. The UI can be overwhelming and complicated, with a plethora of systems for rewards, events, and game modes. However, with time and patience, players can navigate and understand the various aspects of the game.

Monetization and Microtransactions:

Blood of Steel is a free-to-play game without any paywalls or pay-to-win aspects, but the in-game currency system is a point of concern. Earning currency to unlock new characters can be time-consuming, and the prices for cosmetics and skins can be exorbitant. Despite this, the game remains competitive for free-to-play users, with skill triumphing over paid advantages.

Community and Online Play:

The online community for Blood of Steel is relatively small, and players may find themselves frequently playing with bots. However, the game runs smoothly with minimal lag or connectivity issues on American servers.

Final Verdict - Fair

Blood of Steel offers a unique blend of MOBA and RTS gameplay, with intuitive controls, diverse game modes, and a focus on tactics. The game has its shortcomings in terms of graphics, translation, and monetization, but it remains a solid choice for those seeking a more accessible and MOBA-like alternative to Conqueror's Blade. With more polish and attention to detail, Blood of Steel has the potential to become a standout title in the genre.
