Loadout Review

by Marc Marasigan

Loadout is a free-to-play 3D lobby-based shooter where players create their own weapons and fight it out in objective-based maps against other players armed with their own crazy creations. The game features cartoony graphics similar to Team Fortress 2 which not only fits well with the game's comical nature but also look great and will still look great a few years down the road. The game’s sound effects and background music also work well with the overall theme with voice-acting, although limited to moans and grunts of pain, being the cherry on top.

Create, Customize, Kill

Loadout’s core gameplay revolves around building guns and using them against other players. Upon loading the game for the first time players are shown how to craft weapons along with a few other game basics through pop-up boxes. Loadout is simple enough to learn and it’s probably safe to assume that players can easily find their way around even without the tutorial, especially veterans of the shooter genre. Still the addition of a tutorial system makes picking up the game that much easier.

Choose Your Weapon

Loadout features a robust and in-depth weaponcrafting system that allows players to create billions of gun combinations limited only by their imagination. Players can build four basic gun types: Rifle, Launcher, Pulse, and Beam. The modular system then gives players the ability to swap out parts to tailor-fit their guns to their particular playing style, including stocks, scopes, magazines, barrels, and ammunition. Players even get to name their crazy creations. Don’t expect to get the gun of your dreams right off the bat though. For one thing, it takes a whole lot of tweaking to end up with the perfect weapon. For another, players only have access to a limited selection of gun parts early in the game. More parts can be unlocked via the Tech Tree in exchange for Blutes, in-game currency which can be earned by participating in matches It takes During matches, players can also pick-up weapons dropped by other players when they die. Personally, I prefer to stick with my own creations since I have absolutely no idea what they put into theirs. Plus, picking up a different gun doesn’t seem too appealing when you probably won’t live long enough to get the hang of it.

Loadouts

Creating weapons is just the first step. To be able to use these devastating devices, players must first equip them using loadouts. Players only get one loadout at the start of the game. Additional loadout slot are automatically unlocked at certain levels. A loadout consists of two weapons, an item such as a grenade, and a choice of three avatars: Rambo look-alike Axl, Mr. T look-alike T-bone, and the plus-sized twerk-lover Helga. Coming up with the perfect weapon combination is half the fun.

Personally, I like picking off enemies with a well-placed bullet from a sniper rifle and finishing them off with a rocket launcher should they survive. Like weapons, loadouts are entirely dependent on your playing style. Much like classes in Team Fortress 2, loadouts can be changed in the middle of the match and choosing the right one for the situation can at times be what keeps you alive just a little bit longer. Sheer skill and having a more powerful gun works too.

Matchmaking

Finding matches in Loadout is a simple matter of clicking on the Fight button and letting the game’s matchmaking do the work. But it can can take anywhere from a few seconds to ten minutes depending on the number of players currently online. The matchmaking system drops players into the first available match, even in the middle of one and, without any regard for the player’s or their opponents’ levels. At least that’s how it seems for casual matches. Ranked matches on the other hand match players with teammates and opponents of the same skill level or division which is initially determined with 12 provisional matches. Currently, there are only two game modes available for ranked matches with separate rankings for each mode.

It’s Hammer Time!

Loadout features five unique game modes: Death Snatch, Jackhammer, Blitz, Extraction, and Annihilation. Each of these game modes are slight variations of game modes typically found in most lobby-based shooters. Death Snatch is similar to Team Deathmatch except that kills have to be confirmed by collecting vials dropped by opponents. These vials can be picked up by the fallen player’s teammates to deny the other team the kill. Jackhammer, on the other hand, is played like capture the flag with a massive hammer taking the place of a flag. This massive hammer replaces the weapon of the player who picks it up and can be used to melee an opponent with one hit. The more players killed with the hammer the more points the team gets when they successfully bring it home. Jackhammer and Annihilation are the only game modes available for ranked play. Annihilation matches combine the rules of all the other game modes into one which results in a more challenging, not to mention chaotic, match.

You Left A Hole In My Chest… Literally!

One of the things I like about Loadout is its crude humor and gory cartoony violence. Apart from the damage meter in the HUD, avatars also show signs of damage with missing chunks of muscles and body parts along with massive amounts of spurting blood. This may seem like an extreme amount of gore but it’s tastefully toned down by the game’s cartoony graphics and comical nature. Seeing my avatar get fragged by a rocket launcher and die with a gaping hole in his chest while defiantly flipping off his killer never gets old. So is watching your avatar pick-up a health kit, get poked by a dozen green glowing needles, and instantly regenerate biceps that were blown off during the last three-second firefight.

Money Matters

Loadout’s cash shop is as balanced as most free-to-play shooters go. In spite of Loadout’s focus on weapons, they are surprisingly absent from the game’s cash shop which contains all the usual pay for convenience boosters and cosmetic items. Unfortunately, players who like to dress up their avatars have no choice but to spend real-world money since cosmetics can only be bought using premium currency.

The Final Verdict – Good

Loadout is a fun, action-packed, and highly addictive game. The game’s focus on crafting weapons is definitely one of its best selling-points and sets it apart from other casual comical shooters like Team Fortress 2. The crude humor and hilarious animations also add to the game’s appeal. Unfortunately, the game’s developers have abandoned the PC version of Loadout to focus on the game’s PS4 version, a fact that has been on top of the community’s list of complaints. That being said I highly recommend this game to both casual and hardcore gamers alike. A word of warning though, if you’re planning on trying this game out, do it now, before the devs finally decide to shutdown what would have otherwise been a great game for good.
