Meridian 59 Overview

The first 3D graphical MMORPG is now on Steam! Experience classic MMORPG gameplay in the world’s first-ever 3D MMORPG – Meridian 59. You decide how you want to play the game. Choose to roll as a pure fighter and take down your enemies with your weapon-wielding prowess or set them on fire before hacking them to bits as a sword-wielding mage. Ambush unsuspecting players and take their gear or protect the innocent by hunting down known player killers. Join one of three political factions and fight for their chosen factions for control of territory or for tokens of power. Make friends and form alliances to explore the world and take down the toughest mobs together or choose to take on the world and its dangers on your own. Grow more powerful as you use your skills and learn new ones as you progress through the game. Socialize, roleplay, betray other players and simply have fun the way you want to as you immerse yourself in Meridian 59’s nostalgic visuals and unforgiving gameplay.

Meridian 59 Key Features:

  • Classic MUD-Style Gameplay – experience old-school MUD command-based gameplay made easier with a visible UI and 3D visuals.
  • Open Class System – allocate your stats and choose your class according to your preferred game style. Explore the world as a hybrid sword-wielding Mage or as a Swordsman with healing abilities the choice is yours.
  • Death Has A Price – die in the game and you might just lose every item and gear you’ve worked for. If that’s not enough, you also lose skill proficiencies when you die.
  • Make Friends And Allies – socializing with other players is an important part of the game. You’ll need friends and allies to help you complete quests, take down powerful mobs, and pick up your gear when you die.
  • Open PvP World – players can attack other players anytime, anywhere but at the cost of being hunted down as a player killer. Safe zones are rare and far between so watch your back.

Development History / Background:

Meridian 59 is a 3D fantasy-themed MMORPG developed by Archetype Interactive and published by The 3DO Company and is the only game that Archetype Interactive ever released. The small indie development studio was run by Andrew Kirmse, Chris Kirmse, Steve Sellers, Mike Sellers, and John Hanke who later went on to found Niantic. An alpha version of the game first came out in December 15, 1995 followed by a beta test in April 1996. 3DO acquire Archetype in June 1996 for $5 million in stocks. Meridian 59 officially launched on September 27, 1996 roughly a year before Ultima Online was released.

Publisher 3DO shut down Meridian’s servers in August 31, 2000 but was re-released two years later in 2002 by Near Death Studios, a company co-founded by one of the game’s original developers, Rob Ellis. In October 2014, the Evolution expansion was released which included a new rendering engine, mouselook, rebindable keys, dynamic lighting, and other visual enhancements.

Near Death Studios ceased operations in January 6, 2010 and Meridian 59 was turned over to Andrew and Chris Kirmse in February 2010. Meridian 59, however, continued to run until the original developer decided to release the game as freeware on September 15, 2012. The game eventually made its way to Steam in August 28, 2018 and is considered as one of the longest running online roleplaying games.
