Ragnarok Online 2 Review

By Dimitri Jordan

Ragnarok Online 2: Legend of the Second is a 3D fantasy MMORPG developed and published by Gravity. It was released May 1, 2013. RO2 is also available through Valve’s gaming service, Steam. It re-imagines the world from the original Ragnarok Online, which was steeped in Norse mythology and mixed with standard MMORPG gameplay. In addition to quests across open maps, there are instanced dungeons.

The gameplay is similar to most traditional MMORPGs, such as World of Warcraft and Forsaken World. While many of the classes, professions, and monsters come from the original game, this sequel lacks much of the content found in Ragnarok Online, which is still being updated. While Ragnarok Online 2 has 15 classes and a level cap of 50, Ragnarok Online has a staggering 49 classes, with a level cap of 175, as well as a transcending/rebirth system. Those looking for an experience similar to the original Ragnarok game will be disappointed, as RO2 features generic 3D graphics rather than the sprite-based 2.5D graphics of the original title. In fact, many veterans of the original title don't even consider Ragnarok Online 2 as a true successor to the first game, but that doesn't necessarily make Ragnarok Online 2 a bad game; just different from the original.

The graphics are average quality; nothing particularly stunning like Archlord 2 or Black Desert Online. Other anime-inspired titles like Aura Kingdom and Eden Eternal look sharper, as well. It's actually really hard to be impressed by the visuals in Ragnarok Online 2 when there are really good-looking games with the same art style available to play. In an age where many MMORPGs are leaning more toward fast-paced action, Ragnarok Online 2 seems dated, both in terms of graphics and gameplay. While it would have stood a better chance if it was released closer to the start of its initial development cycle in 2006, it lacks strong, decisive features to set it apart from newer titles. Another thing worth mentioning is that the music in Ragnarok Online 2 isn't nearly as memorable as the iconic BGMs of first game. This isn't too surprising, as Ragnarok Online had some of the best video game music I've ever heard.

Starting Up

Ragnarok Online 2 offers a decent amount of customization, with players able to change the gender, hairstyle, eye shape, face, and voice. While it doesn’t have the range of options that games like Perfect World has, it should satisfy the average player.

The First Few Levels

Ragnarok Online 2 starts with a series of quests that introduce players to the basics of fighting, skills, quests, crafting, and cards. These introductory quests last a while, and guide the character through the first ten levels. Players use WASD for movement, and 1-0 for skills and other hotbar items. Players can target enemies and other players with left-click, and can initiate auto attacking by right-clicking enemies. Occasionally, the story is told through cutscenes, breaking up the monotony of quests.

As players level, they earn both skill points and stat points. Stat points can be added to Strength, Agility Intelligence, Wisdom, and Vitality, effecting attributes like Attack Power, Attack Speed, and Defense. Skills have a cap of 3 or 5, and players can unlock more powerful skills by investing in their prerequisites.

Jobs

When players get to Level 25, they are able to choose a class specialization. Acolytes become either Priests or Monks, Archers become Rogues or Beastmasters, Magicians can become either Wizards or Sorcerers, a Swordsman can become a Warrior or Knight, and a Thief can become a Rogue or Assassin. Unlike its predecessor, Ragnarok Online 2 does not feature additional job changes, so after Level 25, players will stick with their job until Level 50. The lack of variety here is a bit disappointing, especially since the original game had an enormous amount of variety when it came to classes and advancements.

Crafting

Crafting adds the most to Ragnarok Online 2. Players must rely on each other more to find crafted gear and weapons that are better than what most shops offer, and strong potions and buffs are essential to late-game dungeons.

Every player chooses a profession class during character creation. They can choose between Alchemist, Artisan, Blacksmith, and Chef. Each class has its own collectible materials used to craft items. For example, Blacksmiths mine ores and Alchemists pick plants.

As players craft items, their profession level increases. Easy-to-make items offer less profession experience than more exotic items crafted with rare material. Players are able to learn new recipes and buy some crafting materials by visiting profession trainers in towns. Players are able to raise their profession level to a max of 50.

Crafting also leads to the Dual-Life System. Players are able to set up their characters as NPCs, offering their particular crafting skills while offline. This will allow other players to buy the services of those who are offline. It’s a pretty unique system, different from the usual player stores that MMORPGs use.

Cards

Cards play an important role in Ragnarok Online 2. Cards are dropped by monsters, and bestow a boost to a player’s stats. For example, the Poring card raises Strength and Vitality by 1 and Wisdom by 2.

Unlike in the original, where cards were equipped to weapons and armor, cards are equipped directly to the character in RO2. Players start with one card slot unlocked, but by Level 50 will have a total of five slots. In addition to finding them by looting monsters, players are also able to go to special merchants who can combine cards to upgrade them or create a different card.

Khara Quests

Players are able to complete Khara quests, which are presented on a large, grid-based menu. Players start with a few initial quests, and by completing one, all the adjacent quests are unlocked. Some quests award players with titles, which boosts a player’s stats. The Khara system adds a great deal of quests, adding to the game’s otherwise sparse content.

PvP

There is little to distinguish the PvP of Ragnarok Online: Legend of the Second from other MMORPGs. There are two methods of PvP available: 1v1 and Colosseum. 1v1 can be initiated anywhere by players who want to find out who is stronger between two combatants. In the Colosseum, players are thrown together into an arena with monsters. Colosseum matches are available twice a day, every day. In these battles, players duke it out to see who can achieve the highest score, with points being given for player and mob kills and points being subtracted for deaths. For each kill, players are given Blood Points, which can be used to buy high quality weapons and armors.

There are a total of five rounds, with Round 1 having 30 players, and each subsequent round dropping the lowest six. In Round 5, the final six fight to see who the champion is. One of the better features of the Colosseum is that all players are on an equal playing-field. Besides the number of abilities, a Level 1 player has the same offensive and defensive capabilities as a Level 50 character. However, they will only have access to abilities they have gained, meaning a Level 50 character will have more than the 3 starting skills unlocked.

The other PvP mode is War of Emperium. In this mode, guilds compete to lay siege to Pron Castle, using siege weapons as well as defensive items. Along the way, players are able to capture three smaller emperiums; doing so provides their guild with unique buffs. Once the gates to Pron Castle are destroyed, the guilds must fight the last wave of Guardians before attacking the main Emperium. Whichever guild succeeds in doing the most damage while taking down Pron Castle becomes the new owner, and in the next War of Emperium they will be defending Pron Castle. The War of Emperium region is also a special PvP zone, where players can earn Blood Points by killing other players and lose points upon dying.

Cash Shop

Gravity offers players plenty of variety in their Kafra Cash Shop. There are costumes to make player’s characters look distinct, as well as powerups, such as 20% more experience and 15% more defense. There is a Premium Mount Random Box that will give a rare mount for 14 days, with a chance of obtaining a mount permanently. Players can also buy a Guardian Rune that allows players to change their classes a cash shop item that allows a class change is actually quite interesting. It's not exactly unfair, as it doesn't provide an in-game stat advantage, but is super convenient for those that want to try a new class without having to re-do the grind all over again.

Final Verdict - Fair

When compared to its predecessor, Ragnarok Online 2: Legend of the Second is an underwhelming evolution to a renowned MMORPG franchise. There is significantly less class choice, and many of the recognizable aspects of the original are given an uninspired 3D face lift. The camera is clunky, and often trees obstruct the player’s view, forcing a close-up view that doesn’t work well for an MMORPG. There is not much to distinguish Ragnarok Online 2 from other 3D MMORPGs, and as a longtime fan of the first game I found it disappointing. I would give Ragnarok Online 2: Legend of the Second 2 out of 5 stars.

Development History / Background:

Ragnarok Online 2 was developed by South Korean game developer Gravity as the successor to the immensely popular original Ragnarok Online game. Ragnarok Online 2 was originally developed as Ragnarok Online 2: The Gate of the World using the Unreal engine, but it was completely scrapped due to unfavorable reviews by players. The game had to be rebuilt from scratch. The final version of the game was built using the Gamebryo engine and is called Ragnarok Online 2: Legend of the Second. Development for the second version of the game began in July, 2010 when it was announced that the first version was scrapped completely. Developers wanted to better align the game with the first Ragnarok. The game launched with some initial success but it quickly faded. Gravity Interactive shut down the service for Ragnarok Online 2 in its home country of South Korea on December 23, 2013. Asiasoft shut down the SEA version on October 9, 2014. The US and EU version, which launched on May 1, 2013 is the last man standing. The original Ragnarok Online game continues to be a money-maker for Gravity. Ragnarok Online 2 never reached anywhere near the same level as success as the original game.
