Development History / Background:

Shadow Arena is a 3D battle royale game developed and published by Pearl Abyss. The game initially started out as a battle royale mode for Black Desert Online and was first announced on January 8, 2019. The mode itself went live on February 28, 2019 but was shut down a few months later on April 10, 2019 due to problems with cheating, hacking, and smurf accounts that took too much of the developers’ time.

Pearl Abyss re-announced Shadow Arena as a standalone game in August 2019. This was then followed by a short closed beta test that ran from February 27 to March 10, 2020.

Open Beta began on May 21, 2020 on Steam. The game was shut down on August 10, 2022.
