Wildgate Winds Down: Farewell Patch Brings Stowaway System and Beacons
Moonshot Games and publisher Annapurna Interactive have delivered what they've confirmed is the last major patch for Wildgate - the premium crew-based extraction shooter that launched July 22, 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S - and it lands almost exactly on the game's first anniversary.
The timing is bleak in a way that's hard to spin. Wildgate's development wind-down was announced previously, and having the farewell patch double as the birthday celebration is the kind of coincidence that stings. The game will stay online in maintenance mode, but major feature development is done.
What makes it sting a bit more is that the patch itself is genuinely solid work. The additions are meaningful rather than cosmetic filler:
- Sensor beacons: New deployable hazard that reveals ships in the surrounding area - adds an intelligence layer to engagements.
- Support beacons: Broadcasts the deploying team's position to allies, functioning as a hardpoint coordination tool.
- Stowaway system: If a player's crew is eliminated but that player boards a surviving enemy ship and extracts with them, both the stowaway and the extracting team receive a bonus - keeping eliminated players engaged rather than spectating.
- UI and matchmaking improvements: Quality-of-life pass on two systems that extraction shooters live or die by at low population counts.
The stowaway mechanic in particular is the kind of design that rewards lateral thinking over pure survival, and it's the sort of system that might have meaningfully extended session length if it had arrived earlier in the game's lifecycle.

Wildgate joins a long list of extraction shooters that showed genuine craft but couldn't carve out a durable player base in a segment where retention gravitates hard toward a handful of dominant titles. For Moonshot, it's a significant inflection point - Wildgate was the studio's flagship, and no follow-up project has been formally announced.
