Spirit Tales Review

By Jayne Moss

Spirit Tales (originally called Glory Destiny in Taiwan) is a 3D fantasy MMORPG developed by X-Legend Entertainment and released originally in Taiwan on January 3, 2012. The game was released in the US by Koramgame on May 10, 2012. The game has upbeat, cheerful graphics and a lighthearted storyline. The graphics in Spirit Tales has the ultra-cute, 'chibi' anime theme and is similar to games like Eden Eternal and Grand Fantasia – both of which were also created by X-Legend.

Starting Out

Right off the bat, Spirit Tales leaves a good impression with its impressive character creation options. Players have a variety of choices when it comes to hairstyle, hair color, faces, and more. Spirit Tales does character creation better than most, leaving most players satisfied with their options. While creating a character, players can preview the emotions their character will use in-game while talking to NPCs, and see what their spirit form will look like. There are different races, all with their own special looks; for example, players of the tribe of the Spirit Hare have rabbit ears. There are thirteen classes, but not every tribe gets every class. Instead, every tribe has three options, except for Fin, which only has one. Each tribe has its own distinct characteristics, but in the end, which tribe players choose doesn’t affect gameplay.

After creating a character, players are thrown right into the action. There’s no tutorial. The closest thing is a starting quest that gets players used to the game. The lack of a tutorial is no problem for anyone use to the genre, as the controls are very basic. Players can navigate through point-and-click or WSAD controls. The first few quests are picked up right at the start and players quickly leave the starting town.

Quests will take players across the continent quickly, not leaving them in one area for too long. This is nice, because things don’t get repetitive. Players are constantly changing environments, letting them experience more from the game than if they were limited to the same places for long periods of time. When getting quests from NPCs, a small window opens up where player characters exchange emotions with NPCs. These interactions are really cute and unique to Spirit Tales. The environments are vibrant, large, and immersive. Experience gain is fast-paced, as is the gameplay, and players gain levels fairly quickly. When leveling up, players gain a single skill point which can be used to access new skills and powerups from the skill tree. The skill tree and leveling are pretty basic, and don’t offer anything different from the average MMO. There isn’t a wide variety of options, so characters will be mostly the same as others from their class. Players go through class advancement at Level 40 and have the choice to pick between one of two jobs. For example, Shamans can become either Sages or Mystics.

Become an Animal

Players in Spirit Tales unlock the ability to turn into a Spirit Form at Level 10, but only after completing a major quest. What players look like depends on what class, gender, and race they chose. Spirit Form can be activated at any time, no matter how much SP the player has, but it drains SP while in use. Using Spirit Form makes players stronger and better at fighting, along with allowing them to get special items from enemies by attacking their weak points and destroying their armor. SP isn’t recovered extremely fast, but its recovered quick enough to use it often, as long as players don’t use it while fighting every single monster they encounter.

So Many Pets

Spirit Tales has an extensive pet system. Players get a pet during the early levels as a quest reward and can pick between three basic monsters. What’s really impressive about the pet system in Spirit Tales is that players can get new pets by capturing and taming monsters. Nearly every monster in the game can become a pet. Not only do pets gain levels, but they can also be “evolved.” Evolving pets makes them bigger, stronger, and gain a star, meaning they become a higher quality monster. Capturing monsters is really easy: players must purchase a pet rice ball from a trader. After dropping a monster's HP below 50%, using the rice ball allows players to capture them as pets.

PvP

There are two different ways to PvP in Spirit Tales. The first is through dueling. Players can request a duel from other players and if the other accepts, they can start a duel. The other PvP option is the Twilight Arena, where groups of players fighting against other groups of players. Teammates are chosen randomly, with five players on each team. The first team to win three rounds wins. Players from the winning team get four Twilight Tokens and the losing team doesn’t get any. Twilight Tokens can be used as currency to buy potions, compound recipes, and other valuable goodies to use during arena battles.

Costumes

Along with the varied character creation, Spirit Tales also lets players dress their characters up in costumes. While many MMOs have special costumes, most limit the way players receive them. Normally, players would need to spend their real cash in order to dress their character up in something cute. In Spirit Tales, players can buy costumes, but they can also be received as quest rewards or as drops from monsters.

Item Mall

Players must purchase “Kcoins,” Koramgames currency, which can be exchanged for Spirit Tales mall gold. The item mall can only be accessed in-game and players must set a ‘mall password’ when entering for the first time for extra security. The item mall has special items, like weapons, armor, or extra costumes.

Final Verdict – Good

Spirit Tales has a lot going for it, but there’s nothing really impressive about the gameplay. Some players may find the repetitive battles to be boring, while others may feel this is no problem. For players who enjoy cute graphics and in-depth character creation options, Spirit Tales might be just what they’re looking for. Overall, Spirit Tales is a well-crafted MMORPG, but a lack of updates and a small remaining playerbase make it difficult to give the game a strong recommendation.
