Overview

Sugar Rush Overview

Sugar Rush was a 2D, free-to-play fighting MMO set in the city of Bashew, a dog-eat-dog metropolis that requires its citizens to take to the streets to fight off NPCs and other players. Three classes were available: the Brawler, the Morpher, and the Ninja, who could be customized visually in a multitude of ways. Players could equip and utilize a variety of weapons and equipment, both found and bought, to their avatars that were equally customizable. The gameplay took place on a side-scrolling arena that meant its combat was reminiscent of brawlers such as Dungeon Fighter Online, barreling through enemies to collect the most coins. Sugar Rush also employed an energy resource called Spark, which was collected through combat to win trophies and allow the player to increase their game ranking.

Sugar Rush Key Features:

  • Three Varied Classes – play as a Brawler, a Morpher, or a Ninja, each offering their own pros and cons in combat.
  • Vibrant, Cartoony Artwork – features colorful, bombastic artwork by Jeffrey Agala, the director of Atomic Betty and a variety of other TV cartoons.
  • Fully Customizable Avatar – pick from a variety of physical features, hairstyles, clothing, and weapons to make your character unique.
  • Multiplayer-Focused Gameplay – team up with friends to fight NPCs or join the game’s PvP arena to beat up other players, with no solo questing required.
  • Spark Collection – to increase your rank and accomplishment complete difficult tasks in the game to acquire Spark, the resource that all players are fighting for.

Development History / Background:

Sugar Rush was developed by Klei Entertainment in Vancouver and published by Nexon. Klei is a prominent developer that has developed games such as Mark of the Ninja, Eets Munchies, and Don’t Starve, whose only cancelled game to date is Sugar Rush. The game’s cancellation appeared to come from the shutdown of Nexon’s North American publishing branch in March 2009, which Klei insisted had gone smoothly. Towards the middle of July 2009 Nexon closed the Sugar Rush website, as they were no longer publishing the game and Klei insisted that the game would still “see the light of day.” Unfortunately, it was cancelled before that happened in late August 2010, when Klei announced that development on Sugar Rush had halted and the game had been cancelled.
