Super Monday Night Combat Review

By, Marc Marasigan

Super Monday Night Combat, or Super MNC, is a third-person MOBA set in a number of futuristic-looking arenas where teams of champions, or Pros— as they’re known in the game, fight it out in a fantasy deathsport league (that reminds me of the film Rollerball). The game is the sequel, or more accurately an improved version, to the original Monday Night Combat from the same developer. Super MNC features great graphics, highly-detailed environments, flashy effects, and well-made, albeit comical-looking, characters. The game’s sound effects are also decent. The soundtrack, however, is what caught my attention. The game features catchy background music that ranges from 80’s disco and rock to EDM and Hawaiian—which surprisingly works amazingly well with the game’s futuristic deathsport theme.

Dazed and Confused

Players logging into the game for the first time will no doubt be left feeling a bit lost because of the game’s lack of a proper tutorial. I know some of you might be thinking, “It’s a third-person shooter/MOBA, who needs a tutorial?” Well, Super MNC’s menu isn’t beginner-friendly and contains terms like “Products” and “Endorsements” without even a vague explanation of what they are.  The game does have a training mode that basically crams every gameplay feature into one map with voice-overs that explain what exactly it is you’re looking at. The information provided by the voice-overs, however, isn’t all that helpful which results in a game with a rather steep learning curve.

Good Evening Sports Fans!

Super MNC is based on the widely-popular Warcraft III mod, Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) and features the same core gameplay mechanics but from a third-person perspective instead of the top-down isometric view common to most MOBAs. Players must push back futuristic bots along three lanes, take out defensive turrets along the way, and ultimately destroy the opposing team’s moneyball. The first team to destroy the opposing team’s moneyball wins the match. The game also features a Tower Defense mode where 5 players work together to survive endless waves of bots. The mix between MOBA and third-person shooter allows for fast-paced combat that has players running, jumping, and vaulting up onto strategically located platforms above the action. And, like typical shooters, players use the WASD keys to move, and the left and right mouse buttons to launch attacks. Players can also activate skills using Left Shift, Q, and E. Also, in keeping with the deathsport theme of the game, sexy pit girls start off every match and a pair of commentators give a dynamic play by play as the action unfolds, with often hilarious remarks and amusing banter.

The Waiting Game

To join a match players select a game mode and matchmaking automatically matches them up with other players. The game’s matchmaking system, however, is faulty at best and more often than not matches a team of noobs against an organized team of veterans. That’s if you even manage to get into a match. Unless you start actively inviting people to join matchmaking queues can take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes due to the game’s very low playerbase. Super MNC also doesn’t have a penalty system in place for leavers. As you can imagine the lack of a penalty system means there no incentives to stay in a losing match, leaving former teammates outnumbered and at a disadvantage. This is a very big problem for MOBA games where a slight shift of power can mean the difference between victory and defeat.

Have it Your Way

Participating in matches rewards players with Experience points and Combat Credits regardless of whether they win or lose  the match. As players progress through the game they can unlock and purchase Endorsements and Products to tailor-fit their characters to their playing style. Endorsements are unlocked as a player levels up and can be purchased using combat credits. Endorsements enhance a characters attributes such as Critical Shot Chance, Health Recovery, Reload Speed, and more. But Endorsements have side effects which lower other attributes. The higher the Endorsement Level the more effective it is. The side effects also dramatically increase with each successive level. Products, on the other hand, also give attribute bonuses but without the side effects. They can be purchased using combat credits and may also require players to be at a certain level before they can be equipped.

The Cash Shop

Super MNC’s in-game shop contains items that can be bought using both combat credits and real-world cash. Aside from purchasing products and endorsements, combat credits can also be used to unlock additional Pros. Items that can be bought using real-world cash, however, are only limited to cosmetic items like costumes and taunts, and convenience items such as combat credit and experience boosts. No overpowered weapons or rare characters; everything is well-balanced, just like a MOBA should be.

The Final Verdict – Good

If you can get past the overly long matchmaking times, Super Monday Night Combat is a very good game and might have been popular in its prime. What’s sad is that the developers have seemingly left the game to die but a handful of people have managed to keep it alive throughout the years. The game is unique, fun, and hilarious at times. What I like about Super MNC is its casual nature and the way everything is kept light unlike other MOBA games like DOTA or shooters like CS: GO. Overall, a good game which has what it takes to be a great if only more people would play. Definitely worth trying out.
