Super Monday Night Combat Shutting Down, Cites New EU Privacy Law

The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has claimed another victim. Developer Uber Entertainment has announced that their MOBA/Shooter hybrid Super Monday Night Combat will be shutting down on May 23, just days before the new law takes effect.

SMNC initially entered open beta on April 18, 2012 and was last updated back in 2013. While the free to play game has been available on Steam since its release, its playerbase hasnt broken past double digits in years. The new EU law requires all companies that serve EU citizens to abide by a host of new data protection edicts or face severe fines. Its likely that Super Monday Night Combat is longer bringing in enough revenue to justify the costs related with complying with the new regulation.

SMNC isn't the first causality of the GDPR, earlier this week WarpPortal announced that they would be blocking access to their entire catalog of games to the EU region. WarpPortal's most notable game is Ragnarok Online, but also includes Rose Online, Record of Lodoss War Online, and Dragon Saga. Players in other regions will not be effected, but EU players will face an IP block which they will have to circumvent via a VPN if they want to continue playing any of those games.
