Wartune Review

By Toan Layne

Wartune is a 2D browser-based fantasy MMORPG developed by 7th Road and published by Aeria Games as well as numerous other publishers. It was released on March 2012 in China and was released on October 25, 2012 internationally. Wartune can also be played on iPhone, iPad, Tablets, and Android phones. The mobile version is separate from the browser-based one and is called Wartune: Hall of Heroes. The regular browser version can also be played on Facebook.

Wartune is a fast-paced turn-based game reminiscent of Final Fantasy games, complete with cool haircuts and flashy moves. The game combines together elements of RPG games with city building gameplay and resource management. The game features graphics that seem a bit dated but work perfectly with the game’s classic RPG theme. The game also features a classic soundtrack that players would expect to hear from classic RPG’s like the NES Final Fantasy Games and the earlier Diablo games.

Wartune’s graphics are good for a browser-based game and it has a “classic” RPG style soundtrack.

Heros Awakening

Players create their characters from a choice of three hero classes: Knight, Mage, and Archer, each with their own roles in combat. Knights have high HP (hit points) and have skills to boost their defensive power. Knights can only equip two-handed weapons like swords and axes. Mages are “Glass Cannons” and can deal good damage to multiple enemies. Mages also have the ability to heal their allies. Archers are a versatile class that can take out enemies from long range. They can deal heavy damage to single or multiple enemies.

Once players have picked their hero, they are thrown into a quick story-based tutorial involving a princess in distress. The tutorial walks player through the basics of the game with a Quest. Like normal quests, the tutorial quest is displayed on the right side of the player’s screen. The game features an auto-walk feature which allows players to simply click on the quest to make their Hero automatically walk to the NPC or area the Quest is indicating. Upon completion of the tutorial, players will receive items, equipment, gold, and experience as rewards. They will also be given their city after finishing the tutorial.

Hero’s City

Wartune, like most browser-based games, employs time-based building for upgrading parts of your city. The higher the level of your buildings, the stronger the troops that can be recruited. A city is composed of the Town Hall, Barracks, Cottage, Warehouse, Academy, Gold Refinery, and Arena.

The Town Hall is the city’s main structure. The Town Hall can’t be upgraded higher than the player’s Hero Level and no building can be upgraded higher than the Town Hall. At level 14, players can “levy” gold from their Town Hall 5 times per day but only once per hour. The gold gained by levying is equal to six times the Gold production of the player’s city.

The Barracks is where players recruit and train troops to aid them on quests and dungeons. Each upgrade of the Barracks unlocks a new troop type and increases the upgrade cap of existing troops. The Cottage determines the city’s population and defines the maximum number of troops a player can have. The Warehouse is where the city’s gold is stored. Gold production stops when the warehouse is full. The Academy is where players can research one of the twelve different technologies that give bonuses to your Hero and troops. Players can only research one technology at a time. Researching also requires Kyanite. Subsequent levels require more Kyanite to research. The Gold Refinery, Farm, and the Tree of Ancients (Tree of Wisdom) are buildings that provide resources like Gold, Daru, and Kyanite, respectively. The Gold refinery and Farm are upgradable buildings, while the Tree of Ancients levels up along with the Farm. Lastly the Arena is a structure dedicated to PvP.

Buff Up!

As players progress through the game they can equip their Heroes with gears to make them stronger and to give them an edge over other players. For a browser-based game, Wartune offers a lot of options for players to customize their gear. Equipment can be enchanted, socketed, refined and recycled. All of these features can be found in the Blacksmith icon from your hotlist at the bottom of the screen.

Enchanting gear can be done by trading gold, the game’s main currency, to improve its primary stat. The amount of stat increase depends on rarity and equipment type. Also, the higher the level of the enchantment, the smaller the chances of success. If the Enchantment fails, the required resources are consumed. Luck Stones can be used to increase the enchanting success rate. These can be acquired in low-level solo campaigns, multiplayer dungeons, and bought from Guild shops. One Luck Stone increases the success rate by 10%. They can be also be synthesized to a higher level through the blacksmith which increases the success rate even more. Equipment stats can also be improved by socketing them with gems. Gem levels can be further improved through "Synthesizing." Players need four gems with the same type and level to create a gem of a higher level. In level 35, players will unlock the “Soul Crystal Engraving” feature.

At level 35, players unlock the Soul Crystal Engraving feature which increases the effect of socketed gems. This feature can be leveled up using Soul Crystals, rare resources that are given as rewards by completing level 36+ dungeons and campaigns. Higher levels gives better effects and bonuses.

Players can also Refine equipment to re-roll or change its stat bonuses. This is particularly useful if you loot items with stats that you don’t need such as a Ring with a physical attack bonus when you’re playing as a Mage. Players can refine equipment until the desired stats are acquired as long as they have the required Refinement Crystals. Keep in mind though that re-rolled stats are random and it may take a while to get those perfect stats.

Recycling, as the term suggests, allows players to convert equipment into Refinement Crystals. Rarer and more valuable items yield more Refinement Crystals. Higher level equipment also produce more Refinement Crystals.

Power from the Stars!

Wartune gives players the ability to customize their characters even further through the Astral System. This feature involves collecting and synthesizing Astrals which can be mixed and matched in a variety of combinations to give characters bonuses like additional physical/magic damage, physical/magic defense, or increased Critical chances or damage. Astrals can be acquired by Astral Gathering which costs gold and is unlocked when a character reaches level 25.

Kill Them All!

Wartune features a turn-based combat system where players can choose to put their units in either the front row or the back row. The front row is suited for units that can take a beating while the back row is perfect for units with low defense. Combat also features a Quick Time Even (QTE) Combat system where players initiate an attack and must then type-in a random set of keys to boost the attack, much like Zell’s limit-break in Final Fantasy VIII.

PvP

Wartune features a variety of PvP options. Solo PvP can be activated in Daily Duels, City Plunder, and Gold Mine Takeover. Taking over a higher level Gold Mine will allow players to earn more Gold. Wartune also features “Daily Adventures.” Wartune has over 20 Daily Quests and 20 Bounty Quests that can be done every day to gain gold, experience and valuable loots.

Players can also engage in PVP through the Arena. In the Arena, players are given a choice of four players of a slightly higher arena rank to challenge. These players are randomly chosen and can be re-randomized by leaving and re-entering the arena. If the challenger wins their ranking will switch places, and if the challenger loses the rankings stay the same. The challenger will get a small reward after the battle whether he wins or lose.

Players can also attack another player’s city to loot them of their Gold. Players can initiate attack through the world map found in the Wilds menu. Attacking another player’s city is the same as Arena duels. If the attacking player wins, the attacker is rewarded a percentage of that player’s gold and a random chance to gain some Kyanite. Players can only loot 5 cities per day for free, additional attempts cost 395 Balens each. Balen is the game's premium currency. These can be bought with real-world money or earned by completing certain actions in-game such as participating in Arena duels or by opening Mystery Boxes obtained from dungeons and campaigns. Players willing to open up their wallets and purchase Balens are at a huge advantage compared to free-to-play users. Given that the core gameplay in Wartune revolves around empire building and PvP, this creates an extremely unfair environment. However, those familiar with other browser-based strategy games shouldn't be too surprised. Games like Stormfall: Age of War, Sparta: War of Empires, Forge of Empires, and other strategy games all have similar cash shops where money buys in-game power.

Guild Battles are also done weekly and are fought between the top eight strongest guilds. The rankings are determined by the Guild Battle Rating which is based on the individual Battle Ratings of guild members. Matchups are done randomly where the winner of each match goes into the top four and the loser goes to the bottom four. This goes on for three rounds to determine the final rankings. Up to 50 players can participate per side in team-deathmatch style combat that requires players to work together to achieve victory.

Final Verdict - Good

Wartune is a fun and easy to learn browser game which does a good job of giving players a taste of both RPG and strategy city-building. The game feels like a classic console RPG and, like classic RPGs, involves a whole lot of grinding. The Astral System is what makes this game stand out and is one of the things I liked about the game. The game also offers a good amount of content to keep players occupied. PvP battles are also fast-paced and requires good team communication which is definitely a good thing. The biggest drawback is the game's pay-to-win elements, as cash shop purchases provide huge bonuses to those willing to open up their wallets.
