The Most Memorable MMORPG Soundtracks

memorablemusicbg

MMORPGs belong to a unique genre. We don’t just ‘play’ them, we get lost in them. A sense of immersion is not just a welcome extra but a key feature of a successful MMORPG. This sense of immersion is achieved through many means including art style, lore, a persistent game world, and can even be aided through a game’s soundtrack. Chances are you’ve spent hundreds, even thousands of hours in a single zone or town during the lifespan of your favorite MMO. There’s a good chance the tracks playing in the background in one of these zones could very well be the music you’ve heard more often than any other in your life. With that in mind allow me to share with you some of my most memorable MMORPG soundtracks:

Ragnarok Online
Developer: Gravity
Composer: SoundTeMPragnarok-online-soundtrack-banner

Let’s start off with a bang. Ragnarok Online has some of the greatest and best known BGMs of any game. The stellar work of the Korean studio soundTeMP, combined with the grind-based gameplay means players often spent weeks or months in certain zones during their RO careers. The capital city of Prontera has my all time favorite theme music and listening to it still brings back nostalgic thoughts of simpler days. The comments on YouTube for the theme show that I am not alone in this thinking. With the second closed beta for Tree of Savior right around the corner, nostalgic RO veterans will hopefully have something worthy to sink their teeth into rather than reliving past glories on private servers.

Granado Espada
Developer: IMC Games
Composer: SoundTeMPgranado-espada-soundtrack-banner

Granada Espado, known for a time in the West as Sword of the New World, offers a unique 3-character gameplay style but the biggest surprise for me was the quality of the soundtrack. When I first tried the game, I had no idea the soundtrack was composed by the same studio that worked on Ragnarok Online. The 3 character system allowed players to camp in strategic locations and watch as their party handled respawning monsters on their own. I often kept my headphones on and listened to the music as my party grinded away.

MapleStory
Developer: Nexon
Composer: Studio EIM, Joe Hisaishimaplestory-soundtrack-banner

MapleStory is another case of ‘memorable due to repetition,’ The nature of MapleStory during its early days all but required players to spend dozens of hours in a single tiny map while grinding off the same stream of constantly respawning monsters. I must have killed tens of thousands of green slimes outside Ellinia and just as many green mushrooms in the Henesys hunting grounds. The iconic main theme and the BGM for some of the early zones are now and forever seared into my memory. Luckily, the music is pretty good so I have no regrets!

EVE Online
Developer: CCP Games
Composer: Jón Halur Haraldsson (aka Real-X)eve-online-banner

Part spreadsheet simulator, part nerd chat client, EVE Online is another one of those games where most of your time is spent doing a whole lot of nothing. This may sound tedious, and it often is. Thankfully, the music helps create a relaxed atmosphere. I’ve had friends tell me that the only thing that kept them playing EVE was the music. Players can progress by having the game run in the background and fiddling with in from time to time. Released way back in 2003, EVE Online offers an extreme deep gameplay experience for those willing to invest the time to learn the mechanics. For many others, it was perhaps the first ‘progression’ game -- think Cookie Clicker or Clicker Heroes. I’m embarrassed to admit it, but that was largely my experience with the game.

World of Warcraft
Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
Composers: Jason Hayes, Tracy W. Bush, Derek Duke, Glenn Stafford

Official World of Warcraft Soundtrack - (01) Legends of Azeroth

With over a decade of lore behind it, World of Warcraft was all but guaranteed to hit the ‘immersion’ ball out of the park. Seeing familiar characters, monsters, and environments was a thrill when I first started playing WoW. But what stopped me in my tracks was the moment I entered Stormwind for the first time. The awe I felt brought me to a standstill on the stone bridge between the outer and inner walls. I just stood there listening to the music for a few minutes before going on to explore the rest of the massive city.

As with music in general, everyone has different tastes when it comes to soundtracks. The songs that mean the most to us likely evoke pangs of nostalgia from our early gaming days. If you haven’t played a particular MMORPG on my list then there is no reason for the music to resonate with you. With that in mind, I look forward to hearing what your most memorable MMORPG soundtracks are. Most tracks can be found online, for example our music section contains thousands of songs. Many more clips are available across the net on sites like YouTube for your listening pleasure.

Triad Wars Gameplay – Gumble’s Grumbles

Triad Wars Gameplay HD - Gumble's Grumbles

Triad Wars Gameplay video from Sean (Gumble)

Triad Wars is a 3D open world action MMO published by Square Enix. Set in the same universe as Sleeping Dogs, players in Triad Wars are members of the Chinese Triads and must work their way to the top of the Hong Kong criminal underworld. In the video above, Sean aka Gumble, grumbles about and discusses some of the key features in Triad Wars.

Games That Launched Genres

The video game industry may seem like a fount of creativity and innovation, but the truth is most games rehash the same few proven concepts. ‘Evolution not revolution’ is the guiding principle of the industry. Thankfully, sparks of genius do light up the industry from time to time. Often these flashes of insight come not from leading studios, but from newcomers or the gaming community itself. Let’s take a look at some of the games that brought new ideas to the table and launched entire genres of their own. Many of these are already decades old, but their influence is still felt among dozens of new releases every year.

EverQuest
Release Date: March 16, 1999 Genre: 3D Themepark MMORPG
Inspired: World of Warcraft, Star Wars The Old Republic, Age of Conan, Rift, Lord of the Rings Online

EverQuest wasn’t the first MMORPG, it wasn’t even my first MMORPG. But it was undoubtedly the game that took the genre mainstream. Prior to EQ, MMORPGs catered specifically to internet pioneers who were willing to put up with simple 2D graphics, high network latency, player griefing, and very rudimentary environmental challenges. Ultima Online was certainly fun, but the monster AI and storytelling were largely not existent. EverQuest changed all that. It was the first fully 3D persistent world, fleshed out with a wide variety of playable races and classes. Players could choose to worship an extensive list of deities, each of whose influence was felt in the game world. NPCs patrolled the streets chatting as they bumped into each other, dungeons had bosses, and highly challenging end game raids awaited dedicated guilds. Many on the original World of Warcraft development team were avid EQ players and have stated that their inspiration for WoW came largely from EverQuest. Dig into any Western ‘themepark’ MMORPG and you’ll find EverQuest at its roots.

Counter-Strike
Release Date: November 8, 2000 Genre: Tactical Shooter
Inspired: CrossFire, Soldier Front, Dirty Bomb, Warface, Blacklight: Retribution, Combat Arms, Alliance of Valiant Arms

Originally released as a mod for Half-Life, Counter-Strike soon eclipsed Valve’s story-driven shooter in popularity. The PC shooter genre has never been the same since. It's difficult to understand just how monumental a shift Counter-Strike represented since almost every modern shooter has borrowed so heavily from it. To get a sense of the shooter landscape pre-cs, you would have to go back to the Unreal Tournament, Quake, and Doom days. Fragfest was the name of the game with bunnyhopping, rocket jumping, and maps filled with floating platforms and powerups. I often miss that gameplay style, but the more realistic ‘tactical’ approach made popular by Counter-Strike has clearly swept the field. Only recently have major studios begun to experiment with less realistic, more over the top shooters once again.

Defense of the Ancients (DOTA)
Release Date: 2003 Genre: MOBA
Inspired: Dota 2, League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, Heroes of the Storm, Smite, Strife

Inspired by the Starcraft custom map 'Aeon of Strife', the first moba, Defense of the Ancients took a simple formula and turned it into the most popular genre in the world: two teams, three lanes, one map. By blending RPG and RTS gameplay, Dota provided a satisfying start-to-finish gaming session that only took 30-60 minutes per match. Development of the Dota mod for Warcraft 3 passed through the hands of three developers. The first (Eul), and last (Icefrog) now work at Valve while the second, Guinsoo is at Riot Games. Dota literally seeded the genre; the two most popular e-sports in the world are still being developed by some of the original hands that created the genre. Like the other mods on this list, Dota quickly surpassed its parent game in popularity. Tens of millions of gamers across the world who would otherwise have no interest in a Western developed fantasy RTS ended up playing Warcraft 3 solely to access Dota. The stunted Battle.net lobby system even helped entire gaming platforms such as Garena in Southeast Asia get off the ground by offering players additional hosting and server options. These third party platforms effectively made Dota into a free to play game since a retail CD key was not required to connect users. Dozens of great custom maps were released for Warcraft 3 over the years, many of which also inspired stand alone games (tower defense, anyone?) but Dota is without question *the* map that everyone will remember from Warcraft 3.

Minecraft
Release Date: May 17, 2009 Genre: Sandbox
Inspired: Trove, SkySaga, Cubic Castles, Voxelnauts, Terraria, CubeWorld, Block Story, Blockland

Online sandbox games have been around for decades. My first taste of the genre was with Roblox after which I moved on to a MMORPG called Wurm Online. First released way back in 2006, Wurm Online was co-designed by Notch, the now legendary founder of Minecraft studio Mojang. While previous sandbox games had steep learning curves that limited their appeal, Minecraft hit upon the winning formula of simple ground rules combined by nearly unlimited freedom to build and explore. There’s no doubt that the recent slew of voxel based games draw their inspiration from Minecraft. Perhaps the most important game on this, Minecraft has set the standard for PC gaming for a whole generation of young gamers. Almost every genre, including MMORPGs, have felt Minecraft’s influence. Gamers have higher expectations when it comes to crafting, building, and interacting with their environment. Simply right clicking an ore node and waiting for a bar to fill just doesn’t cut it anymore.

DayZ
Release Date: January 21, 2012 Genre: Survival
Inspired: Rust, H1Z1, DayZ (standalone), 7 Days to Die, ARK: Survival Evolved

Dean Hall’s zombie survival mod quickly eclipsed the original game it was built on. ARMA 2 was a highly realistic tactical shooter that might have even been a good game, but I don’t know a single person who bought it for any reason other than DayZ. The mod tapped into Minecraft’s insight that what gamers really want is freedom to create their own experiences. DayZ threw players into massive adult playgrounds where avoiding zombies quickly took a backseat to solo and gang brutality. While most shooters only reward twitch gameplay, DayZ required resource management, a silver tongue (open mic), and real (albeit temporary) trust between strangers. YouTube videos of hilarious raids, kidnappings, betrayals, and overall shenanigans quickly spread across the gaming community and the foundations of a new genre were thus laid.

Hearthstone
Release Date: March 11, 2014 Genre: Digital Collectible Card Game
Inspired: Hex, SolForge, Chronicle: RuneScape Legends, Mabinogi Duel

Hearthstone was Blizzard’s first move into free to play. The premier PC gaming studio had long stuck to the traditional retail model with even their older titles still commanding hefty prices. As far as experiments go, Hearthstone has been a massive success beyond anyone’s wildest expectations. Originally released for the PC, Hearthstone has since blown up in popularity thanks to its cross platform mobile version. The game is a simple 2 player card game with lore drawn from the Warcraft franchise, specifically from WoW. What allowed Hearthstone to capture such a large market and earn over $20 million a month is its simplicity and the advantage of having been dreamt up specifically with digital platforms in mind. Magic: The Gathering, the premier and still finest TCG ever created, has had a digital version since 2002. Sadly, the game’s arcane ruleset and abundance of phases make it nearly impossible to play online. Even newer, more stripped down versions of Magic: The Gathering have failed to gain much of a following. But Hearthstone’s success has inspired a host of new studios to try their luck at digital card games that offer short match durations, simple rulesets, and a mix of single and multiplayer content.

When and where will the next genre defining game come from? There's no way to know for sure, but I suspect the first online game to properly pull off cross-platform (PC, mobile phone, browser, etc) play will redefine our definition of one or more MMO subgenres. A few titles are vying for this position including Lineage Eternal (Lineage 3) and Albion Online but none have seen full release just yet.

Ultima Online Celebrates 18 Year Anniversary

uo-classic-painting

The genre defining fantasy MMORPG Ultima Online celebrated its 18th birthday this weekend. Originally released on September 24, 1997, the official game servers are still up and running despite hundreds of new competitors in the online gaming industry. Based on the popular Ultima RPG series, UO took the franchise and perhaps the entire video game industry to new heights. Developed by Origin Systems, later bought by Electronic Arts and now serviced by Broadsword Entertainment, Ultima Online still has new content being delivered. A new expansion titled Time of Legends is scheduled for global release on October 8, 2015.

As a special anniversary gift for loyal players, all accounts active during August, September, or October will receive the expansion for free. While its great to see the official servers still up and running, many veterans would likely not recognize the current state of the game. Multiple expansions, graphic revisions, and complete gameplay overhauls have drastically changed all aspects of the classic MMORPG.

the current state of Ultima Online, originally released in 1997

Fans looking for a dose of nostalgia can sign up for a free trial on the official site, or check out one of the many free private servers available for Ultima Online. My personal favorite is UO: An Corp which offers a mix of classic rules with a touch of original features. As a player since Publish 4 (March 8, 2000), Ultima Online holds a special place in my heart as my first and still favorite MMORPG. The sandbox gameplay, open PvP, and player-driven economy were all features that helped make Brittania feel like a living, breathing world. Few MMORPGs since then have even tried to live up to this legacy.
