Big Picture Games finally has the original Darkfall source code in hand, cementing their status as the team to resurrect the game's original vision with Darkfall: Rise of Agon. With the announcement that they now have the source code, the team has revealed details about their projected timeline and the game's business model.
Darkfall: Rise of Agon will be a subscription game, but will not feature a box fee. As Big Picture Games put it, "many members of the Darkfall community have paid a box price already (some multiple times) in order to join the world of Agon and charging one again did not sit well to us." The subscription fee will be $14.95 at launch, but only $10.95 during the Public Beta phase—discussed below.
There are three tiers of Founder's Pack—ranging from $19.99 to $99.99—that will be made available, each of which offers Closed Beta access and two of which offer a pass on the subscription during Public Beta and varying amounts of subscription time at launch. The team has estimated a number of months that each tier will be able to play during the Closed and Public Betas. If they manage to launch early, the remainder of the estimate will be given to you as subscription time at launch.
Alpha will begin in a month or two. The exact starting date will be dependent upon internal tests. They are planning to have the Alpha running very shortly after confirming that they have a stable server running. The Alpha test will be free, but only 500 invites will be sent out during the first week. More will be sent out as the Alpha progresses.
Closed Beta will begin an unknown amount of time after Alpha. At the beginning of Closed Beta, the team will wipe the servers. The Closed Beta run for three or four months before Open Beta begins. The Closed Beta test will be free, but only Founder's Pack owners will be able to play.
Open Beta—or Public Beta—will start sometime after Closed Beta and run into launch. As mentioned above, during this test, players will be required to pay $10.95 to play. Purchasing the $49.99 or $99.99 Founder's Pack will allow players to play for free during this period. Public Beta is estimated to begin in "early 2017."

Not too long ago, Aventurine announced that they would be open to licensing deals that would allow a third-party company to resurrect Darkfall in its original form. Much like Lineage 2 Classic or EverQuest's progression servers, it would allow players to relive a completely different era of the game's existence. Following a fairly small amount of time spent negotiating the deal, Big Picture Games have announced that their new server, called "Darkfall: Rise of Agon," is now accepting alpha sign-ups.
To sign up, simply head over to the official site and fill out the requested information. Only 500 players will be selected for this phase of testing.
