Ashes Of Creation's Node System Detailed

Ashes of Creation came out of nowhere at the end of last year and impressed everyone with stunning visuals and innovative ideas. There are quite a number of systems that Intrepid Studios seems to hope will revolutionize the MMORPG genre. Yesterday, the company gave us a closer look at one of those systems: the node system.

Ashes of Creation's node system isn't anything like Black Desert Online's. Each node is representative of a zone that can be built up by players taking on quests, completing raids, and taking part in other various other in-game activities that we would consider to be more "themepark"-like gameplay elements. As players complete more and more of these in-game activities, the node will slowly be built up, going from an Expedition to an Encampment to a sprawling Metropolis. The full development process will take "many weeks" and will require players to cooperate.

Nodes that have been built up can then be destroyed by other players. Players of one node can declare war on another node, activating a siege. Once a siege has been activated, each side will have a set amount of time to prepare for the siege. They will then fight at a specified time, during which the defenders will have a "considerable defensive advantage" if their node has reached the "City" tier of development.

Other details include the fact that all nodes that are at the "Village" tier of development or higher are governed by players who must "carefully balance a variety of city mechanics." Various questlines will be affected by what nodes have been developed. The availability of items and mounts will change based on what nodes have been developed. Certain dungeons and raids will only become available if certain nodes have been developed. In short, the node system influences almost all other aspects of the game.
