It's rare that we get true space games in the MMO genre. I can only name a handful off the top of my head. But today, a new competitor called "Avorion" has entered the arena. Avorion is a space sandbox that attempts to blend the gameplay seen in games like X and Freelancer with online competitive or co-operative multiplayer, giving players the ability to build their own spaceships along the way. One of the game's key features is that the ships are made up of "freely scalable blocks," rather than voxels, and can be procedurally generated, but can still break into pieces during combat.

The full set of key features is as follows.

- Non-voxel block ships that break into pieces
- Procedural generation for infinite numbers of factions, ships and stations
- Build your own space ships
- Co-Op or PvP Multiplayer
- Flying and commanding large scale battleships
- Trading system with over 100 different goods
- Lots of weapons and system upgrades to customize ships
- Day 1 Mod support with lua

Boxelware Founder and Lead Developer Konstantin Kronfeldner had the following to say about the announcement.

We're proud to have come such a long way. I have been working on Avorion alone for over four years. After the Greenlight campaign a collegue from uni joined me and we managed to successfully fund a Kickstarter in May 2016. Since then we have been working hard to make Avorion a unique experience, with still a lot more to come. We and Avorion are still only at the beginning of our journey.

Avorion is available now on Steam Early Access for $17.99.
