Chris Metzen has come out of retirement to work with Blizzard Entertainment again as Creative Advisor for World of Warcraft. Metzen had worked for Blizzard for over 22 years and was formerly the studio’s Senior Vice President of Story and Franchise Development before he stepped down from his post in 2016 to spend time with his family and “lay around on the couch and get fat.

“It is with great joy that I announce Chris Metzen has joined the Warcraft Leadership Team as Creative Advisor,” said Warcraft General Manager John Hight. “Chris’s focus initially will be on World of Warcraft, then his work will expand to other projects across this growing franchise. Chris was one of the original team members working on the Warcraft universe back when it began in 1994, and we are so happy to be reuniting him with the world he helped create.”

After his retirement, Metzen disappeared from the limelight and reappeared five years later to Kickstart a new Dungeons & Dragons campaign. He also made headlines in 2021 at the height of the Activision Blizzard sexual harassment scandal and subsequent lawsuit when he penned a statement apologizing for not noticing what was going on which played a part in fostering the frat boy culture within the studio.
