Dune: Awakening Game Director Offers Tips On How To Survive The Deserts Of Arrakis
Funcom’s series of Dune: Awakening teaser reels as the team offers some tips on how to survive the harsh desert environments of Arrakis. This time around, game director Viljar Sommerbakk takes center stage to paint a picture of what you can expect expect as you make your way through the desolate, spice-filled planet which he describes as “one of the harshest planets in the universe.”
“Arrakis is regularly blasted by sandstorms,” says Sommerbakk. “In the beginning, you’ll scramble to find shelter and hunker down as you wait for the storm to pass. Water is scarce and must be extracted and conserved. Being in the sun too long will make you dehydrate fast, so keep to the shadows by day. Wear a stillsuit on your journeys, harvest water drops from dewfields by hand as you cling to life, then bring a blood exsanguinator when you expect conflict.”
The weather isn’t the only thing that you’ll have to contend with, as fans of the novels and the films already know. If you’re not careful, you might just find yourself being sucked into the gaping maw of one of the gigantic sandworms crawling beneath the sandy dunes.
“You’ll want to travel to biomes further away, but crossing the desert is dangerous,” Sommerbakk warns. “Moving on the sand causes vibrations. This will make the sandworm come after you. Remember to turn off all your Holtzman tech as it engages the worm. You and your guild will want to be far away when it hits.”
Needless to say, your journey through Arrakis will be an exciting, albeit dangerous one. As to when that journey begins is still unclear as Funcom has yet to lock in a launch date for the Dune-inspired open world survival MMO apart from a vague release window of 2024.
