The wait for Dune: Awakening continues, but a recent interview with Funcom’s Chief Product Officer, Scott Junior, sheds light on the upcoming open-world MMO’s performance and the studio’s efforts to ensure that it will run smoothly no matter what platform you’re on.

While excitement for Dune: Awakening sizzles in the desert heat, Funcom has chosen to prioritize PC for the initial release. “It’s one of the reasons we’re coming out on PC first," Junior explained to VG247. This allows them to “spend more time optimizing” the game before tackling the complexities of different console hardware.

The Xbox Series S, however, presents a unique hurdle. Junior candidly admitted, “Xbox Series S is a challenge.” While the team is working on optimization, next-gen’s budget-friendly console might require extra effort to ensure a smooth experience.

However, Junior reassured fans that “powerful cards from a few years ago should be able to run the game” both visually and in terms of its massive scale. He even hinted at the possibility of older hardware handling the game. “[Dune: Awakening] will still perform well on hardware that’s years and years old. We’ll be able to do it!” he proudly states.

No official minimum specs have been released yet, but the next beta test could serve as a baseline performance test of sorts. This will allow players to see how their rigs handle the vast deserts, brutal sandstorms, and massive sandworms of Arrakis.

In the meantime, start dusting off your old graphics cards – Dune: Awakening might just be playable on a wider range of machines than initially feared. Funcom offers a taste of actual gameplay footage from the game in the video below.
