Dune: Awakening teaser reels continue to roll in a year-and-a-half since the Dune-inspired open world survival MMO was announced back in August 2022. The latest one offers a brief introduction to the upcoming game to mark the opening of the game’s official TikTok page.

In the new reel, Funcom chief creative officer Joel Bylos shines the spotlight on the setting of the game – the spice-rich desert planet of Arrakis. While it’s going to be the same planet described in Frank Herbert’s novels, the game’s version is largely based on Legendary Entertainment and Denis Villeneuve movie adaptation, and in some cases is a direct copy of the locations and assets used in the film.

“Funcom has been working with Legendary to stay true to the IP and to build the visuals out of the movie into a massive game world,” says Bylos. “What we’re hoping to do is create an experience where you can play a survival game first and foremost where you must search for water, search for shelter, and walk softly on the sand to avoid the sandworms. In addition to this, you’ll be doing it online with thousands of other players.”

Funcom held an NDA-covered closed beta test for Dune: Awakening in early December and teases another one set for early this year. The second movie in Villenueve’s two-part Dune series will also be premiering in March, which the developers will likely take advantage of to build more hype for the upcoming game.
