Funcom and Level Infinite have dropped the first in-engine trailer for their upcoming Dune-inspired open-world survival MMO Dune: Awakening. The new trailer showcases footage from the game’s pre-alpha build and offers fans their first look at the some of the locations that players will visit as they explore the spice-laden deserts of the planet Arrakis.

“In Dune: Awakening you strive to survive the countless dangers of Arrakis alongside thousands of other players,” said Funcom. “Explore your role and identity while experiencing an epic personal journey, from searching for water and building shelters against storms to controlling the flow of spice in the top echelons of the planet.”

“Spice lies at the center of conflict, advancement, and power in Dune: Awakening,” the studio added. “Where spice blows appear, players converge. Fights can range from quick skirmishes to large-scale battles with infantry, ground vehicles, and ornithopters each providing an essential role.”

Dune: Awakening promises multiple paths to follow and choices to make as you fight to survive in the harsh desert landscapes based on both Frank Herbert’s novels and Denis Villeneuve’s blockbuster film. You can decide to follow the path of a mercenary and equip yourself with advanced armor and weapons, scout the arid landscapes on board an ornithopter, build and operate a spice operation, or try your hand at politics to gain influence with the Great Houses of the Imperium.

“Working with a universe as rich and expansive as Dune is the perfect fit for Funcom’s drive to create compelling multiplayer open worlds,” said Creative Director and Funcom Chief Creative Officer Joel Bylos. “With Dune: Awakening, we’re trying to push the boundaries of what people expect in the Survival space – and I can’t wait until we can get it into the hands of our players.”

“We are thrilled to bring the Dune universe to life in such an immersive and interactive way,” added Legendary Entertainment’s VP for Interactive Media Sam Rappaport. “The depth and detail Funcom is bringing to the Dune: Awakening PC and console experience is astonishing and we can’t wait for fans of Dune and survival games to join us on Arrakis and try their hand at surviving the most dangerous planet in the universe.”

Dune: Awakening will be launching on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S at a still-unannounced date. Beta sign-ups are now open on the Dune: Awakening official site and is now available to wishlist on Steam. The team promises to reveal more information about individual game elements over the next couple of months leading up to the beta test.
