Dune: Awakening Shares Insights Into Its Religious And Player Housing Systems

Now that the first official Dune: Awakening trailer and the second Dune movie are out in the wild, fans are naturally curious as to how much of the books and the movies will make it into the upcoming survival game. While the game takes plenty of cues from the movies, Funcom will be taking a few liberties of its own with Dune: Awakening, particularly with how it will be presenting religious themes.

According to Funcom’s recent tweet, religion will still be present in the game but won’t be as prominent as in Frank Herbert’s novels and Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptations. Don’t expect to be the prophesied savior of Arrakis though, as you’ll be taking more of a supporting role in the overall narrative.

“We agree that religion is an integral part of the Dune universe. This is why in Dune Awakening you will meet and interact with people of different religions along your journey,” the studio said. “However, as opposed to the story presented in the books, the player is not a messiah and will not play a major role in any of them. Leading people on a holy war is not why you arrive on Arrakis.”

Players bases will also play a more important role in Dune: Awakening compared to other multiplayer survival games and will be “paramount to your survival,” as opposed to simply functioning as spawn points and places to store your items and resources. Players will also be able to create architectural blueprints that they can share with their friends or sell to other players.

There is currently no confirmed launch date for Dune: Awakening, but we do know that Funcom is planning at least one beta test prior to its release. You can sign-up on the official site to receive a sign-up form via email and hopefully get a chance to participate in the upcoming beta tests. You can also learn more about the process of creating the game world with inspiration from both the books and the films in the developer video below.
