For the first time in three years, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, will be returning to an actual, physical, in-person event. Although, it looks like it’s going to be a rather lonely affair as the big three of the gaming industry – Xbox (Microsoft), Sony, and Nintendo – won’t be attending the gaming convention this year, or ever for that matter.

Sony hasn’t made an appearance in E3 since 2018 and is apparently content to just host its own gaming showcase. Microsoft, on the other hand, said that it would continue to support E3 but won’t be able to make it to this year’s event as they’ll be holding a separate event around the same time.

It’s been a rough few years for E3 with both E3 2021 and E3 2022 being cancelled due to the pandemic and E3 2021 being a purely digital event. This year’s event, however, promises a revitalized experience for both attendees and exhibitors as ReedPop replaces the Electronic Software Association (ESA) as the event’s organizers.

“Since ReedPop took on the contract to run E3 six months ago, we’ve worked diligently with ESA members based on their feedback to create a new type of E3 that supports their goals and needs,” the event organizer told IGN. “We continue to work tirelessly to create a show that brings together the global gaming industry. We believe we’ve created a new format for the event that serves the needs of both the industry and its fans, and are committed to building and growing it in the coming years.”

“As we spent much of 2022 refining how E3 2023 would take shape, reflecting on the feedback we solicited, we did not send a single contract to an exhibitor until the start of this month,” ReedPop added. “We have received a tremendous amount of interest and verbal commitments from many of the biggest companies in the industry, and when we are ready to announce the exhibitors we are confident it will be a lineup that will make the trip to Los Angeles well worth it for the industry and consumers alike.”

E3 2023 will be held from June 13-16 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
