Elder Scrolls Online Previews ‘Lair of Maarselok’ Scalebreaker Dungeon, Kicks Off Orsinium Celebration Event
Elder Scrolls Online players will get a vicious new dragon to contend with when the Scalebreaker DLC comes out later this month. Maarselok will be the final boss in the Lair of Maarselok, one of the two dungeons featured in the upcoming expansion.
“Deep beneath the border mountains of eastern Grahtwood, the Dragon known as Maarselok wakes with the release of his brethren from the Halls of Colossus. Hungry and vengeful, the terrible beast has ravaged the wilds, and his corrupting power threatens the Elden Root tree if left unchecked.”
“Maarselok exudes corruption. It seeps into everything he touches, from the ground to the trees and plants and then to the animals,” explains ESO Dungeon Lead Mike Finnigan. “Visually we wanted to represent the corruption within the Dungeon as otherworldly and unnatural. As players progress through the dungeon, they will see more and more of the corrupting influences throughout, and it lends an alien feel to the environments.”
Players will first need to deal with Maarselok’s guard of corrupted animals and plants before they face off against Maarselok himself in three separate boss encounters throughout the dungeon. “We wanted to keep that feeling that Dragons aren’t just normal monsters to be defeated,” says Finnigan. “In order to do that, we kept Maarselok’s health level very high but split up the encounters so that you slowly chip away at its health over the course of three fights. It also allowed us to show different aspects of Dragon encounters from flying, to perching to eventually fighting on the ground.”
Successfully taking down Maarselok and saving the Elden Root tree from his corruption will reward players with unique gear, items, and collectibles including the Dragon’s Defilement heavy set that debuffs all nearby enemies every time you’re hit with a melee attack.
The Scalebreaker DLC is scheduled to launch on August 12th for PC and Mac, and August 27th for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
