Final Fantasy XI's 14-Day Free Trial Has Returned

Square Enix announced yesterday via Twitter that it has brought back Final Fantasy XI's 14-day trial. The trial has a number of limitations, such as your character data only remaining for 90 days after the trial unless you pay, a limit of only three characters per account, you can only reach level 50, and you can only access content that was "included in the initial Final Fantasy XI release," among other limitations.

While the return of the free trial is certainly a good thing, one has to wonder why Square Enix didn't opt to create an unlimited free trial with similar limitations to that of the new 14-day free trial, as many other subscription games have received in the past, including the company's own Final Fantasy XIV. The company is clearly trying to bring new players into the world of Vana'diel, but I don't know that the 14-day free trial will help them accomplish that in the long run.
