Final Fantasy XIV's New Shirogane Housing District Fills Up in 15 Mins, Players Outraged Over Flippers

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 4.1 is officially live and with it comes the brand new housing district of Shirogane, the 4th such district to be added to the game. As expected there was quite a land rush with thousands of players trying to log seconds after the servers came up. The new district introduced 12 new wards (each with 60 housing plots) for a total of 720 housing units all of which were completely gone within 15 minutes on busier servers like Gilgamesh and Balmung (the more valuable large plots were all gone within 5 minutes). Beyond the extremely limited supply and huge demand, what made things especially frustrating for many were the disconnects / login errors many players encountered which made the entire ordeal feel unfair to many.

After plots filled up many of those fortunate enough to get a plot quickly began flipping their plots for multiples of what they paid. Just hop on over to reddit's Final Fantasy XIV Housing market subreddit to see what's happening. On Gilgamesh (my server) small houses that cost 3M to place were selling for upwards of 40M, Medium homes that cost 18M to place were selling for 100M, and large homes that cost 50M to place were selling for upwards of 500M. While flipping houses for huge profits is technically against the game's terms of service, there's a vibrant real estate market in the game on Reddit and other places.

Final Fantasy XIV has a persistent housing system with a limited number of plots, which means on busier servers practically everyone but the most hardcore players can't ever afford to buy a house on the secondary market where prices are 8-10x their regular price.
