2024 is going to be a big year for Final Fantasy XIV with its Dawntrail expansion and Xbox Series X|S launches looming on the horizon. The expansion won’t be coming out until summer 2024, but the Xbox launch is nearly within reach.

The good news is that open beta testing on Xbox Series X|S is set to begin within the month, specifically on February 21. The bad news is that you’ll need to have an active Xbox Game Pass subscription to play the game when it officially launches on the next-gen console. That’s on top of the usual monthly subscription fee for the game itself.

The open beta test will also only be available to new FFXIV players. Those with existing accounts or previously took advantage of the free trial will have to wait until official launch to jump into the Xbox version, although you can always create a new account just for the beta test if you really want to jump in.

The same restrictions that apply to the free trial on existing versions will apply during the Xbox open beta. Some features won’t be available, but you’ll have free access to all content up to the Stormblood expansion with no playtime or level limits. Eligible players will be able to download the open beta version via the Microsoft Store starting at midnight PST on February 21.

Official launch is still scheduled for spring 2024 but Square Enix has yet to lock in a definite date. In the meantime, you can check out detailed instructions on how to join the upcoming beta test here.
