Genshin Impact Was The Highest Grossing Game In October Says SuperData

genshin impact keyart bannerSuperData has just published their report on the highest grossing games for October 2020. According to the report, gamers spent $10.6 billion on digital games in October resulting in a 14% increase in game spending year-over-year.

“Consistent with ongoing trends, console spending grew the fastest, with earnings up 18% over 2019. This was especially impressive growth given that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launched in October 2019 and many of the biggest titles of the 2020 holiday season were not released until November. Earnings on other platforms rose as well, with mobile up 15% and PC up 10%.”

Mihoyo’s Genshin Impact was the highest-grossing game in October which is surprising considering that gamers usually stay away from Chinese-made gacha MMORPGs. Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs: Legion also broke franchise records, selling 1.9 million digital units in just the final three days of October. Star Wars Squadrons also did extremely well with 1.1 million units sold beating Star Wars Battlefront 2’s launch sales by a fairly good margin although earnings were lower for the game because of its lower price.

SuperData also reported a substantial rise in revenue for game subscription services like EA Play, PlayStation Now, and Xbox Game Pass. The total revenue for these services increased by 142% year-over-year and subscriptions rose by 113% with the majority of growth accounted to the Xbox Game Pass.
