When the PlayStation 5 came out in 2020, Sony Interactive Entertainment promised free upgrade paths for some of their exclusively-published cross-gen games, including Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon: Forbidden West.

“The PS5 versions of those games are built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5 feature set, and we have an upgrade path for PS4 users to get the PS5 versions for free. It’s about people having choice,” wrote Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan in a blog post back in September 2020.

But, to the community’s dismay, Sony announced their $60 and $70 price points for Horizon: Forbidden West on PS4 and PS5, respectively, with no option to upgrade from the older to the newer platform. Players were instead advised to purchase the $80 Deluxe Edition to get access to both the PS4 and PS5 versions.

In response to the negative feedback that followed the announcement, Sony gave in and gave those who pre-purchased the Horizon: Forbidden West PS4 version a free upgrade to the PS5. This applies only to those who’ve already purchased the game. Horizon: Forbidden West will also be the last Sony game that will be getting a free PS5 upgrade. Paid upgrades will apply to all other games going forward, including Gran Turismo 7 and the next God of War.

Note that the paid upgrade policy only applies to games published and developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Other publishers and developers may continue to provide free upgrades as long as they want to.
