Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Jim Ryan has announced that he’ll be stepping down from his role as CEO of Sony’s video game arm in March 2024. He has been with Sony for 28 years and served as the company’s President and CEO for the last five years.

“I have announced my retirement after nearly 30 years at Sony Interactive Entertainment,” Ryan wrote in his farewell letter. “I did not take this decision lightly and I absolutely love SIE and our community, but of late I’ve been finding it increasingly difficult to strike the right balance between having my home in the UK and my job in the United States.”

“I feel humbled at having the opportunity to lead a company delivering products that touch millions of lives,” he continued. “From award-winning games to the incredibly immersive technical achievements delivered with PlayStation 5, I’m immensely proud of what we have achieved and very optimistic for the future of Sony Interactive Entertainment.”

According to the official press release, Sony Group’s CFO Hiroki Totoki will replace Ryan as interim CEO of Sonly Interactive Entertainment until a new CEO is appointed.

Like most video game companies, Sony as a whole has struggled to meet its financial targets this year due to poor PlayStation 5 sales, delayed Sony Pictures movie releases due to the ongoing writers’ strike, and the financial challenges plaguing the tech industry. That being said, the PlayStation is still dominating the market and Ryan won’t be leaving a sinking ship behind.
