Nexon’s 19-year-old sandbox MMORPG, Mabinogi, is getting a major makeover as the studio prepares to transition the game from the relatively outdated Pleione Engine to Unreal Engine 5. The UE5 upgrade, dubbed Eternity Project, was announced last weekend with the Mabinogi’s director saying that it was necessary to ensure that the game’s continued operation.

“Our development team has explored various ways to maintain Mabinogi continuously,” the game director said. “Although it is difficult, I think it is a necessary improvement. Plans have been made since March to replace Mabinogi with the Unreal Engine.”

The team added that Project Eternity is a long-term project with the goal of not only enhancing the classic MMORPG’s visuals but also make it more immersive and improve stability. No timeline has been given for when Mabinogi Eternity is expected to launch, but we’ll let you know as soon as Nexon makes an announcement.

In the meantime, you can check out a preview of what one of the characters will look like when the new engine goes live in the video below.
