ESO Season One Launches July 9 — But Xbox Layoffs May Shift Update 51 Plans
ZeniMax Online Studios has launched Season One: Return of the Thieves Guild in The Elder Scrolls Online, going live July 9, 2026 with a new Thieves Guild storyline, the Favors reward system, Dynamic Encounters, the Tamriel Tome, and the Gold Coast Bazaar.
What's live today is only the opening slice of a multi-month rollout. The confirmed Season One schedule stacks additional content across the coming weeks:
- July 29: Sheogorath storyline launches alongside a Golden Pursuits campaign accompanying the cheese tour with a side of danger
- August 20 and September 30: Two additional Golden Pursuits campaigns go live
- September 21 - Update 51: Adds the Nowhere Vault, the Crimson Veldt 12-person trial, the Rumors System, and player experience improvements
- September 30–October 14: High Seas of Tamriel event runs, with Deathmatch and Crazy King Battlegrounds and a reworked Whitestrake's Mayhem also slated through the season
The seasonal model itself is worth flagging for players tracking ESO's trajectory. ZOS has shifted away from the annual Chapter cadence toward themed, multi-month seasons - a structural change covered in more depth in the Season One launch date announcement. The move follows years of Chapter-driven releases and represents a meaningful reconfiguration of how ZOS paces live content delivery.
One significant shadow over the schedule: this week's Xbox layoffs hit ZeniMax Online Studios and ZeniMax Media hard - approximately 379 positions, or roughly 24% of the cuts across the broader Xbox organization. The ESO team indicated some previously-announced roadmap items would be shifting as a result. Season One was far enough along to launch on schedule, but players tracking Update 51 and beyond should expect potential calendar adjustments as the studio regroups.
