The latest episode of New World’s Forged in Aeternum video series is now out, and this time, Amazon's narrative director Rob Chestney, lore master Aaron de Orive, and narrative designer Divya Dias take a deep dive into the game’s enemy factions. They explore the philosophical motivations behind each faction, and give players a glimpse into the lore that underpins the game.

The trio begin with the soul-corrupting Lost, which serves as a reminder to make the most of life. They then move onto the Ancients, whose own hubris led to their downfall. However, there’s a raging debate among the developers about whether it was the Ancients or their human students who caused the corruption.

“Immortality comes at a cost. Aeternum is infested with lethal enemies ranging from the Ancients to the Angry Earth. Some Adventurers lose their will and become one of the Lost, while others give into the seductive whispers of power that foster Corruption. Even maintaining humanity can mean fending off a seemingly endless onslaught from the Varangian Knights. No one is safe on the Eternal Isle, but there’s still hope.”

The game developers likened the island’s situation to a virus invading a host, where either the humans or the corruption is the virus depending on which dev you ask.

Whether you’re a fan of lore or not, the video is worth watching for its visuals and descriptions, as well as developer commentary. The developers explain the plot’s philosophy and complexities through the lens of corruption as a sentient entity, allowing players to immerse themselves in the game’s world fully. If you’re a New World player who hasn’t explored the game's lore yet, then this episode is an excellent place to start.
