This year’s Summer Game Fest took place over the weekend and was chock-full of reveals and announcements for MMO fans to get excited about. One of the more notable reveals was New World: Aeternum which is essentially a bigger and better reboot version of the PC MMORPG specifically designed for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The news didn’t exactly come as a surprise since Sony inadvertently leaked part of the announcement a few hours earlier. Amazon has also been hinting at a big announcement for several months leading up to this weekend’s official reveal.

“Amazon Games [announces] New World: Aeternum, a thrilling and content-rich action RPG featuring real-time combat and set in a vast and mysterious world where players have the freedom to choose how they shape their adventure,” the studio announced.

New World: Aeternum will include the base game and all past updates and expansions up to Rise of the Angry Earth in addition to new content and quality-of-life features like cross-play, a revamped dialogue system, and an improved leveling experience, all of which will also be making its way to the PC version at launch. Aeternum will also feature end-game solo trials, a new 10-player raid, and the game’s first large-scale PvP zone.

It’s worth noting that Amazon is marketing New World: Aeternum as a co-op and team-based RPG in the press release. However, it doesn’t look like it’s being actually downgraded from a full MMORPG, despite the wording used in the press release which is typically reserved for multiplayer and shared-world games and rarely used for MMORPGs.

“Players can choose to explore Aeternum solo or co-op, using cross-platform play to team up with others,” reads the press release. Amazon, however, was quick to explain that it’s still entirely up to players to create their own experiences, whether in a group or as a lone wolf.

“We understand there is some confusion today around if New World: Aeternum will feel like the same genre of game as the New World you are playing today, and the answer is yes,” the studio clarified on Discord. “New World has never fit perfectly into any label but the New World: Aeternum you will play in October will feel like the same genre of game as the New World you are playing today with lots of improvements, polish, and the opportunity to play with your friends who may be on Playstation, Xbox, or PC.”

New World: Aeternum is set to launch on Steam and next-gen consoles on October 15 with a $59.99 box price. PC players who bought the Rise of the Angry Earth expansion will gain access to the reboot/relaunch version at no extra cost, while base game players will get to continue playing the base version without any of the new content.
