Nexon Reports Q2 2017 Earnings - Revenues up 23% Year over Year

Nexon reported their Q2 2017 earnings report today and it showed a 23% increase in revenue year over year. Nexon attributed the strong quarter to Dungeon Fighter Online in China and the game's 9th anniversary update. Mobile game revenue as a percent of total sales were 24% and PC was 76%. As with previous quarters, China and Korea made up the bulk of the company's sales. North American sales were only 4% of company wide sales, but this figure is expected to jump next quarter thanks to the August 8th launch of Lawbreakers. Multiple mobile titles are expected to launch this year in North America.

The Europe and "others" segment reported a whopping 103% increase in total sales year over year, largely due to the success of Dynasty Warriors Unleashed in Southeast Asia. Nexon's pipeline of games seem largely focused on Mobile. Personally, I'm excited to try Both Tree of Savior: Mobile Remake and Mabinogi Mobile.

I'm curious to see how Final Fantasy XI Mobile does. Unfortunately none of the pipeline games (aside from Lawbreakers / Titanfall Assault) have definitive release dates.

  • As stated on their Q2 2017 Consolidated Financial Report, Nexon continues to lose money in North America, Europe, South America, and even in Japan! Their only profitable segments are China (royalty) and Korea. Seeing as Lawbreakers was largely a retail flop, I doubt the game will have much impact on their numbers for the second half.

And if we mention how they failed with the latest patch for Ghost in the Shell First Assault and made everyone quit and posted reviews on Steam that turned the game from Mostly Positive to Mostly Negative and now going closer to Very Negative.
