Overwatch 2 Launch Plagued By Connection Issues And DDOS Attacks

Overwatch is now dead and Overwatch 2 has officially taken its place. The sequel/reboot/expansion’s highly-awaited and much-hyped launch, however, was plagued by various technical issues although the blame can’t be laid entirely at Blizzard’s feet.

Shortly after the servers came online, Blizzard President Mike Ybarra tweeted that the servers were being hit by massive DDOS attacks, causing drops and other connection issues. The DDOS attacks continued until early yesterday morning but it looks like they weren’t entirely to blame either, based on a separate tweet by Overwatch 2 Director Aaron Keller.

“We’re steadily making progress on server issues and stability, as well as working through a second DDoS attack,” tweeted Keller. “We’re all hands on deck and will continue to work throughout the night. Thank you for your patience – we’ll share more info as it becomes available.”

Players are also complaining about missing items and broken console account linking. There’s still no word on when the issues are expected to be fixed although Senior Community Manager Andy Benditt offered a lengthy update last night on the major issues that they’re currently working to address.

In any case, Overwatch 2 is now live and free-to-play on PC via Battle.net, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, at least for the hero shooter’s PvP mode anyway. Blizzard says that they’re still working on PvE which is expected to roll out at some point next year with release plans to be announced later.
